It's Only December 6th And We've Already Seen Over A Billion Dollars Of New MLB Contracts
Massive show today with so many guys getting paid in the last week. And holy hell are these contracts unbelievable.
I don't want to shit on Matt Boyd but it's downright amazing he got $10M for one year. He's not far removed from surrendering 54 homers in 44 starts while having the worst AL qualified ERA. And yet he showed enough in limited action last year to warrant ten million fucking dollars. That's so much money.
For context if all 26 guys made $10M, you' have the 2nd highest payroll in MLB in 2023. And again no disrespect to Matt Boyd for getting paid. I'm all about it.
Broader picture though - if he's getting $10M, what does that say for the bigger names? And as we're debating it this week, the Trea Turner news drops. 300 million for over a decade. You got the Mets committing $170M over the next 2 years to 2 guys that can remember Mike Ditka's tenure as Chicago Bears head coach. That's fucking old.
On it goes. One monster deal after another. Jacob deGrom locking down $37M a season and ruining Joel Sherman in the process?
Delightful. All of it.
Will your team do shit? If you're a Pirates fan then you might want to sit this episode out.
Otherwise we have a little bit of something for everyone. No better time of the year to talk about your baseball team.
