The Way Blake Griffin Committed to Jeff Capel and Oklahoma Was As Blake as It Gets
On today's Barstool Bench Mob, we welcomed on Pittsburgh Head Coach Jeff Capel. The former Duke player joined us to talk about the solid job he has done turning around the Panthers program in a short period of time, Curb Your Enthusiasm, his time with Coach K, and much more.
Throughout the course of his career, Coach Capel has been involved in the recruiting processes of many stars. Jayson Tatum, Zion Williamson, and Brandon Ingram may come to mind during his time on the staff at Duke.
But the story we are going to highlight today goes back to Coach Capel's time as the man at the helm at Oklahoma, where he was from 2006-2011. One of the top guys he got to commit when he was in Norman? Blake Griffin. If you listen to Pardon My Take, you know all about the back-to-back Blake of the Year winner, and the qualities it takes to be considered a Blake. So with that, I asked Coach Capel to turn back the time a little bit, and if there was a Blake story of Griffin doing something that fits the personality of a "Blake."
And believe it or not, the way Blake Griffin committed to the Oklahoma Sooners was very, very on-brand. Take a quick look:
No podium, no line of team hats, and no ceremonies needed for the reigning BOTY. Just a casual chat on the couch while watching an NBA game and throwing in, "Oh, by the way, I'm in, let's do this" on your way out. You've got to love this, and you can't be surprised if you've listened to Blake on past episodes of Pardon My Take.
Coach Capel also told us a story of how Coach K cracked open a beer when Jayson Tatum committed to Duke. I highly recommend listening to the full podcast below for all the details.
