A Super Bowl-winning quarterback and MVP in 1983, Joe Theisman's career came to a sudden end on November 18, 1985. That is when he suffered a gruesome leg injury on a tackle by Lawrence Taylor. Theismann, a native of South River, New Jersey, starred at Notre Dame, where he finished second in the 1970 Heisman vote.
Joe Theismann would spend time in the CFL before signing with the Washington Redskins in 1974. After four years of backing up Billy Kilmer, he finally got a chance to start in 1978. After initially struggling under Joe Gibbs, Joe Theismann had his finest years in 1982 and 1983, leading Washington to consecutive Super Bowl appearances.
After his injury, Joe Theismann had a long career as a television analyst working on ESPN for 20 years. Today, Theismann continues to make NFL media appearances and is a motivational speaker, discussing how he overcame his injury.
