Pirate Porn Is Out, Pirate Comedies Are Totally In

Pirates are more than buried treasure and plots for cheap porno movies to be downloaded at work. The Golden Age of Piracy (1650 -1730) produced some of the greediest, most blood thirsty, legends history has ever seen … Captain Morgan, Francis Drake, Shih Yang, Calico Jack, Black Bart, Blackbeard.  

The HBO series Our Flag Means Death takes bits and pieces of historic fact with real pirates to put together a roller coaster story with a hilarious cast. OFMD centers around one of the more pretentious pirates to sail the seven seas, The Gentleman Pirate - Captain Stede Bonnet. 

Whether it's The Flight Of The Concords, SNL, or even Game of Thrones … there isn't a face you won't vaguely recognize in this crew. Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) does an incredible job at playing a more positive, pirate Michael Scott, but the star of the show is Taika Waititi for playing Blackbeard. 

Waititi is no stranger to playing historically dark characters since he played Adolf Hitler in JoJo Rabbit (2019).  Whether it's directing, acting, or producing I'm about to start giving anything Waititi does the must watch label because of his ability to take a dark, heavy topic and make it silly and light hearted without taking away from the point. The intensity of with Blackbeard perfectly compliments the light hearted nature of Captain Stede, to stick with The Office references - the way Dwight perfectly compliments Michael. 

If you're looking for a new show to watch that's original, creative, and laugh out loud funny, Our Flag Means Death should be on the top of your list.
