Happy Birthday Token CEO! ft. NCAA ladies Kim Mulkey, Brenda Frese, & Sedona Prince
Today's Token CEO is KILLER. Might be one of our best episodes yet featuring head coach of the Baylor Bears Kim Mulkey, head coach of the Maryland Terrapins Brenda Frese, & fan favorite player + TikToker Sedona Prince! In this episode Erika talks with each one about their NCAA Tournament experience, best + worst moments, things they've learned, and so so much more. Let's introduce our ladies...
Starting the episode, we've got Kim Mulkey, and she is a damn firecracker. Just some background. She's...
- the 2020 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee (Same class as Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett...casual)
- a 3-Time NCAA Champion as head coach (BU joined Tennessee and UConn as the only programs with three titles or more)
- a 23-Time Big 12 Champion
- the fastest Coach (man or woman) to reach 600 wins in Division I history (700 games)
- Only person to win a national championship as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
She is also famous for her sideline outfits, most notably her pink suit with the glitter pumps when they beat Oregon in the 2019 semi-finals. Let's take a look:
Next up we've got Brenda Frese, who is truly an icon to the state of Maryland. A little about Brenda…
Been the head coach for the Terps for the last 19 seasons, recently passed 500 wins- making her the winningest coach in program history. She is…
- A 2006 National Champion
- Named 2021 ESPN National Coach of the Year
- 4x BIG10 Coach of the Year
- Her Terps have appeared in 3 Final Fours and 16 NCAA Tournaments since she took over. Bonkers.
Another cool thing about Brenda is that she NEVER gives herself the credit. Always directs the success to her staff and players. She's also played a huge part in getting the Minnesota women's basketball team to play in the same arena as the men’s team while she was coaching there. Brenda definitely has had a steady, highly successful team throughout her entire tenure at Maryland.
Her mantra is work + rest = success. She encourages her staff to take time off and to find balance. That’s how she juggles being a mother, wife, sister, daughter. Badass.
Rounding out the episode is Sedona Prince. That name might sound especially familiar because she is the one who filmed the insane video showing the shitty "weight room" the women were provided compared to the men. If you haven't seen it…
Here's your casual reminder that if you don't think that's a problem…you are part of the problem.
Anyway, Sedona is busy exposing the NCAA and being a complete firecracker in the TikTok & social media game. Not to mention she is definitely a star (standing at a casual 6 foot 7 in) off and on the coart, since joining the Ducks in 2019 after transferring from the University of Texas. She talks alllll about her experience in the bubble and what it was like to first-hand deal with the way the NCAA handled their tournament PLUS the frustrations of not owning her Name, Image, and Likeness.
Not to mention it's Token CEO's 1st birthday. Thanks to everyone who listens and thanks to everyone for consistently commenting nice things on these blog posts :)
