The Greatest Song To Listen To With Subs Just Turned 10 Years Old: Lil Wayne's 'A Milli'

So my esteemed colleague Young Pageviews fired off the above tweet. It stunned me. Stopped me right in my damn tracks. The fact that Lil Wayne’s ‘A Milli’ came out 10 years ago makes me feel old as fuuuuuuuuuuck. Where did the time go? I feel like Tha Carter III dropped last year. What an album.

More importantly though, the thought of ‘A Milli’ specifically made feelings of nostalgia wash over me. It transported me back to a time when I had two 10-inch Kenwood subs with an Alpine amp in the trunk of two-door Chevy Cobalt.

There are times (basically all the time) when I’m a stereotype of a middle-class suburban white kid and this is 100% one of those times. Everyone I knew had HUGE subwoofers in tiny cars. Civics. Accords. Camrys. Corollas. Malibus. Altimas. All of them packed to the gills with disproportionally-sized sound systems. Just a bunch of dudes cruising around town with their trunks obnoxiously rattling at every stoplight. It was a beautiful time to be alive.

A Milli was the crown jewel song to listen to with subs. It’s an incredible experience. I can vividly remember listening to it on repeat with my pals. Just letting the song hit our brains with an earthquake of bass over and over and over and over again. The bass starts and never stops. Blown speakers were a given and so were the good times. As soon as you heard the “Bangladesh” at the beginning of the song you were fully prepared to get a severe concussion. It was so much fun. If you weren’t trying to permanently damage your hearing by playing A Milli as loud as possible then you wouldn’t have been a friend of mine.

And it turns out other people have similar memories

If a time machine is ever invented, this is where I’m going. Forget every other time period or moment in history. Fuck going to the future. I’m going back to 2008 when A Milli dropped, hopping in my Cobalt and driving around town for hours.
