"The End Of The Fucking World" Is Your Newest Must Watch On Netflix
It’s known fact that I’m the biggest romantic comedy guy in the world and am always on the hunt for the new, hot one. Well, last night I was blessed to find it: The End of the F****** World. It’s dark, twisted, heartfelt, and hysterical. At first it kinda came off as one of those serious comedies that people love to say are hilarious because they think it makes them sound smarter and more introspective, but before I knew it I was in tears laughing. Perhaps I turned into one of those aforementioned assholes, we have no way of knowing, all I know is I enjoyed the hell out of it.
For starters, it’s a very smooth and easy watch. Shoutout to the Brits and Channel 4 for that, it’s 8 episodes and each are about 20 minutes so you can knock it out in an evening no problem. The music and writing are perfect, but the real heart of the show is in the two leads. They’re flawless and their chemistry is undeniable.
James, a budding psychopath who’s been murdering small animals and has stuck his hands in fat fryers just to feel something, has decided he’s ready to move onto humans and chooses Alyssa. Alyssa is a child of divorce who doesn’t fit in with her mom’s new family life and is ready to get out of the sleepy British town. Together, they decide to make their dreams come true. They’re not your typical romcom stars, not by any stretch of the imagination. They’re not bubbly and aww shucks why won’t anyone just love me forever, they’re… well, quite psychotic, and the show embraces that. They don’t realize that they’re meant to be and become happy, the show stays true to itself the entire time: two deranged kids who are lost and looking for acceptance, or their place in the world, with a suitable partner.
My favorite part of the show, aside from the obvious chemistry, is it occasionally gives you the inner thoughts of the kids. For instance, when Alyssa asks James during a fight if he wants to just leave he mind says the opposite (as girls tend to do) and repeats “Please don’t” over and over. It’s a unique and cool way to express what we know all too well about teenagers, and all humans, really: we very rarely say what we actually mean. We pretend to be more disconnected than we actually are and say things like “fine, get out” when we actually mean “come closer.” Like all of us still are, or maybe it’s just me, they’re insecure teenagers who are scared and just want someone they feel safe around. The show consistently blends the idea that they’re psychos with emotional connections and it does it perfectly.
All in all it’s an awesome show and an easy watch. Not going to give any spoilers but absolutely watch it.
PS – Be warned there is a VERY DISTURBING animal death scene that I was not warned about. Luckily for you, I’m nicer than the person who recommended the show to me.
