Last Night I Was Reminded I Don't Go To Nearly Enough Concerts

The year was 2005. The date was Wednesday, June 8th. The location was Merriweather Post Pavilion, a concert venue in Columbia, Maryland, 10 minutes from where I grew up. The band playing there that night was The Killers. They were touring in support of Hot Fuss, which is an absolute banger of a CD, front to back. And where was I? At home. I was at home, for it was a school night and I was not allowed to go to concerts on school nights. Fair enough, school started at like 7 in the morning and I probably had a math test to study for or something (my parents might read this blog so I’m trying to say I definitely don’t still resent them for this, wink wink).

You see, I’ve always loved concerts. I saw the GOAT Elton John with my parents when I was 7 or 8, but the first concert I paid for a ticket for was blink 182 in 8th grade

New Found Glory opened and it was great.

Since then, I’ve been to a concert here and there. Oasis a couple times, OAR a handful of times, a few festivals, even saw Lit and Bloodhound Gang in college. Let me tell you, Lit was awful. So bad. And Bloodhound Gang did this bit where they puked on each other, it was disgusting. Absolutely disgusting.

So I saw all of that to say this- despite the concerts I have been to, there are WAY MORE that I simply haven’t been to. Bands I love that I’ve never seen. Some has to do with anxiety, some has to do with laziness, some has to do with the fact I just don’t go for no real reason. And last night I was reminded that going to concerts is actually a fucking blast.

Last night I went to Barclays Center in beautiful Brooklyn, New York and saw the Killers. 12 years after I couldn’t go on a school night, I finally saw them. And let me tell you, it was fantastic. Well worth the wait. You can listen to CDs, you can watch live performances on YouTube, but there is just no feeling like seeing a band you like, live and in person. The atmosphere, the thousands of people singing and swaying and having a great time, it’s one of those times you can be in a bubble and not worry about ISIS or being in videos against your will (relevant inside-Barstool joke, nailed it!).

Living in NYC, I have the opportunity to go see bands I like pretty much weekly, and I never go. It is my New Years resolution to try and see a few more this year. Just baby steps. Nothing fancy. Just here and there check out some live shows instead of going home, taking a xanax, and watching Mad Men. But please just don’t tell my mom if it’s on a school night!
