A Month From Today, A Third 'Cloverfield' Movie Is Coming Out, And We Know Next To Nothing About It
This will come as a surprise to some of you, a portion of which will probably try to hang this over my head forever, but it’s 2018 and I’m going to be honest with the readers…the original ‘Cloverfield’ is one of my favorite movies of all time. I’m a total JJ Abrams fanboy, I love everything he does/is involved in, and ‘Cloverfield’ was one of the most unique movies I had ever seen when it came out. The combination of the trailers, the viral marketing campaign, everything leading up to it, it was just a perfect storm of awesomeness in my then ten year old brain. The movie is an exhausting watch, and you really get the feel of an all night journey through New York City during a monster attack from it. It always feels to me, like I’m there. I get that it’s a silly, kind of gimmicky thing, with the shaky cam, and it’s not for everyone, but it just works for me.
When ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ was announced weeks before it dropped, you bet your ass I freaked out. I saw the leaked footage of it, and immediately went to the movie theater, bought a ticket to ’13 Hours’, the Michael Bay Benghazi flick I really had no interest in, and left after the trailer played. It was the first time I paid to see a commercial in my life. I was first in line opening night, and while it was much, much different than the original (as it’s not a sequel, but a “blood relative”), it blew me away. John Goodman delivered such a haunting performance that I felt he should’ve been nominated for an Academy Award, and it got wacky at the end with some alien shit, reminding me of a modern day episode of The Twilight Zone.
Now, we’ve got ‘God Particle’, the third film in this universe, coming out on February 2nd, and we know pretty much nothing about it. No trailer, no poster, no synopsis, no website…nothing except the cast – Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O’Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo and Zhang Ziyi – and the fact that it takes place aboard an international space station. The ‘Cloverfield’ fanboy in me wants there to never be a trailer/poster, and the movie just drops with that super secrecy associated with the franchise, but I realize it’d make $15 at the box office though, so they can’t do that. I’m insanely excited for this, though. 2018 for me is like, ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, and this. If all three deliver, nothing else matters.
I’ll be sure to update you on any new developments we get. If you’ve never seen the first two flicks in the ‘Cloverfield’ franchise, give ‘em a watch. See if they’re for you.
