Roger Goodell is 'Furious' Jerry Jones is Trying to Cut His Pay

SourceDallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has threatened to sue the National Football League if a contract extension for commissioner Roger Goodell is approved by the league’s compensation committee, sources told Outside the Lines.

A team owner and a team executive told Outside the Lines that Jones has hired David Boies, the famed New York lawyer who … has previously represented Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, who now faces numerous sexual assault allegations. …

A person who spoke recently with Goodell said the commissioner is “furious” about Jones’ and other owners’ insistence that his next contract’s compensation should be more performance-based, including incentives that would allow him to be paid at roughly the same level of his current deal. “He feels as if the owners have made a lot of money and he should be compensated accordingly,” the source said. “The incentives thing really angers him.”

There aren’t a lot of things that happen in corporate board rooms between rich guys in suits that gets me excited. Short of maybe Morgan Freeman taking over Wayne Enterprises from Rutger Hauer or DiCaprio and Johan Hill doing rails of coke off the naked bodies of prostitutes, you can count me out. I don’t hang around too many people who click to the business section first.

But this? This gives me movement in my bathing suit areas. Because this isn’t just your regular, every day power struggle. This is a power struggle with villains on every side. A long, elegantly crafted cherry wood conference table with hypocrites. liars, ingrates, sleazebags, egomaniacs and duplicitous weasels in every one of the ergonomically sound leather chairs.

I’ll get to Jerry Jones, but let’s start with the lawyer he hired. David Boies doen’t just “represent” Harvey Weinstein. His firm also worked for the NY Times while they were working on a story about Weinstein. Which is a conflict of interest all day long. And at the same time, they were hiring private eyes to get to know accusers like Rose McGowan using fake identities, pretending to be on Weinstein’s victims’ sides, while really trying to dig up dirt on them in order to spike the story.

Now let’s get to Jones. This fucking guy. This unwrapped mummy couldn’t have been a bigger cheerleader when Roger Goodell was donkey punching the Patriots if he’d gotten all the owners together to form a human pyramid and start the “Gimme a G!” chant. When Der Commissar was sending his Secret Police after the best team in the league over nothing, this lizardy wretch was his Minister of Propaganda and Public Enlightenment. Saying what a great he’s doing and the Patriots need to just accept the punishment for the good of the league. Now the monster he helped create is coming after him and it’s a federal case. How’s it feel, Jer? First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist. …

And Jones so unhinged about Ezekiel Elliot’s suspension – and I totally agree with him, Elliot is getting screwed, thanks guys like Jones – that he’s going to sue the owners who are on the compensation committee.  A committee he isn’t on. For handling their business in a way he doesn’t like. So that’s the owners of the Falcons, Giants, Steelers, Chiefs, Texans and Patriots. After we were told repeatedly during Deflategate that Mr. Kraft legally couldn’t sue the league. Now he himself might get sued. For not cutting the pay of the Commissioner that screwed his franchise.

Lastly, let’s go to Goodell himself, who has the brass balls to be “furious” over having to earn his massive salary after raking in over $200 million already. An empty suit who hands out discipline with all the judgment of Robin Arryn. A guy who could be replaced with a 3-year-old holding an Echo Dot and the league would still make money. And who’s presiding over the first decline in popularity of his sport ever. He has the unmitigated gall to act like he’s being treated unfairly.

OK, I’m done. Like I said, corporate intrigue isn’t my thing and I tend to give business stories a wide berth. But I do like this one, just because I admire the total hypocrisy of it all. Here’s hoping it ends ugly. And with Goodell having to go get a real job for once.

Buy a shirt.

Goodell is a clown
