The Red Band Trailer for 'I, Tonya' is Out and Holy Moly it Looks Amazing

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about how how insanely jacked I am for I, Tonya just on the basis of one 30-second teaser trailer. But this? This makes it look we’ve got a potential masterpiece on our hands. And I’m not even exaggerating.

Like I said, the hardest part about doing a film treatment of the greatest sports scandal of all time is that the real Tonya and Nancy saga was like a perfect piece of fiction to begin with. A figure skating novel written by Carl Hiaasen or somebody. Except it had so many surreal characters and bizarre plot twists, nobody could make it up. So it works better in documentary form than a “Based on the True Story” movie. But by God, they looked like they nailed it.

Yes, Margot Robbie is still way too hot to play the kind of backwoods, Pacific Northwest trailer monkey that real Tonya was. But somehow she pulls it off. And Alison Janney as her mom is perfection. But the guy who looks like he steals the movie is Paul Walter Hauser as Shawn Eckhardt. I didn’t think it was possible to cast that role, but he’s exactly the right blend of wannabe cop and transparently clueless dumbassery. I readily admit I’ve watched this trailer six times and find something new to make me laugh out loud each time.

I’m all about wanting to see Thor: Ragnarok. And Justice League. And I’ll take a back seat to no man when it comes to looking forward to the next Star Wars. But you can be damned sure the Irish Rose and I will be there on opening night of I, Tonya if we have to camp outside the theater.

P.S. I see you Margot Robbie as Tonya, and raise you Caitlin Carver as Nancy Kerrigan. Your next Hollywood star, ladies and gentlemen.
