Houston Furniture Store Owner Mattress Mack Loses $10 Million In Refunds After Astros Win, But He's Actually the Man
Houston’s Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is out $10 million thanks to a bet he made with customers on the World Series.
McIngvale promised to refund customers of Gallery Furniture who spent $3,000 on mattresses if the Houston Astros won the World Series.
“It’s the best thing we could ever possibly do. The Astros inspired the city. We’re thrilled to give this money back to excited customers. We bleed orange out here,” McIngvale told Chron.com Thursday morning.
McIngvale is no fool when it comes to making crazy bets. He reportedly took out an insurance premium between 10 and 20 percent of the total value of what he had to pay out to his customers and placed some bets on the Astros in Las Vegas that earned him at least $1 million, ESPN added.
“I had a pretty strong feeling that the Astros were going to win when we made the promotion in late June,” McIngvale said in response to why he took out insurance.
So I blogged this yesterday and just wanted to follow up a little bit here. The Astros obviously won yesterday in Game 7 of the World Series and Mattress Mack now has to pay out $10 million in furniture refunds. This isn’t the first time he’s lost one of these, as he had millions of refunds riding on the Seahawks to beat the Broncos and for the Astros to win over 63 games the following year. He claimed he stopped gambling years ago, yet he still does these whacky promotions which is totally some form of gambling. Whatever, to each their own. The reason I’m blogging this is because Mattress Mack is a legitimately great dude and it needs to be known.
During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, McIngvale opened two of his stores to 200 people who had fled New Orleans seeking shelter. Back then, those impacted by Katrina stayed for about two days.
During Hurricane Harvey, McIngvale opened two Gallery furniture stores as shelter to those displaced by Hurricane Harvey. The furniture store also used their largest moving truck to rescue people displaced by the flooding. Dude is a legit hero. I’d like to see that fraud Joel Osteen do any shit like this, fucking loser.
As I wrote in yesterday’s blog, Mattress Mack flew 98 people out to LA for Game 6 and gave almost half of them tickets to the game. The dude loves his city of Houston and I don’t think it’s being talk about enough how great a guy he is. Give him the fucking key to the city please.
