Mark Wahlberg Says He Has Asked God To Forgive Him For Making "Boogie Nights"

(Source)- It may have been a critical and commercial hit, but actor Mark Wahlberg says he’s prayed to God for forgiveness for his role in the 1997 movie “Boogie Nights.” Standing next to Cardinal Blase Cupich on Friday night in Chicago, Wahlberg, a committed Catholic, told Chicago Inc., “I just always hope that God is a movie fan and also forgiving, because I’ve made some poor choices in my past.” Asked if he’d ever prayed for forgiveness for any movies in particular, he added, “‘Boogie Nights’ is up there at the top of the list.” Wahlberg — who famously portrayed porn star Dirk Diggler in that 1970s-set film — was in Chicago to support Cupich’s effort to draw young people into the church.

Look, I get what Mark Wahlberg is doing here. He was in church talking with one of God’s right hand men and felt some pressure to come down on the movie about the smut business that turned him into a superduperstar. We’ve all been in awkward situations like that. If a family friend asks me about the latest Barstool controversy, which there’s been no shortage of lately, I have to hold my head a little before giving an explanation about what Barstool is and whatnot. Usually in the end we come out smelling like a rose and everyone is happily on their way.

And the same should have happened for Wahlberg and Boogie Nights. He can apologize for The Happening. He can apologize for every Transformers movie he has been in. He can apologize for basically the entire 2nd half of Entourage’s run on TV. He can apologize for leaving last year’s Super Bowl early despite historical evidence saying the Pats would pull it out since Eli Manning wasn’t playing in the game. But don’t apologize for Boogie Nights. Everything about that movie is gold. The drama, the characters, the music, the cinematography, the unintentional comedy. All of it together is a piece of artwork. Can you imagine da Vinci apologizing for the Mona Lisa? Fuck no. Same applies to Marky Mark for being the star of an absolute CLASSIC with songs like this

And this

I don’t give a shit if the movie was mostly about the porn industry. If anything, that movie tells of the dangers of sex, drugs, and rock and roll more than any tale of Sodom and Gamorrah ever could. Just watching that movie scared me straight about life in the 80s. And if you dipped into the booger sugar after seeing what it did to the beautiful lives and friendship of Dirk, Reed, and Scotty, then you are a crazier person than I.

Actually Mark can apologize for not immediately coming out and saying that giant dick at the end of the movie was a prosthetic. I felt insecure about my manhood before I saw Dirk Diggler’s gift. After that python unfurled before my eyes, I thought I was doomed to live a life of sexual frustration. I mean that is still the case, but I shouldn’t have known that early in life what my destiny in the bedroom would be.

TL;DR- I really, really, really, really, really love Boogie Nights and nobody on the history of the planet should apologize for making it. Even Leo passing on it to do Titanic ended up being a blessing in disguise since I can’t imagine anyone other than Mark Wahlberg being Dirk Diggler. Now if you will excuse me, I am going to rewatch one of my favorite scenes in movie history.

Annnnnd after watching that scene, I just remembered that Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead which has now put me in a bad mood at the end of the work day.
