A Texas High School Girl Won Homecoming Queen One Week, Kicked The Football Team's Game Winning Field Goal The Next.

CHRON – Claire Jeffress, Dawson’s senior kicker who earned homecoming queen honors last week, one-upped her performance Friday night when she drilled a game-winning 30-yard field goal with 1:08 left to provide the Eagles with a 38-35 win over rival Pearland at The Rig.

Jeffress, who was rock-solid on all five of her PAT kicks, had a little room to spare in clearing the crossbar and lifting Dawson (5-1) to its third District 23-6A victory without a loss. The setback dropped Pearland to 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in district games.

“I just wanted to do what I’ve always done and not think of it as any big deal,” said Jeffress of her game-deciding kick. “My team had faith in me, and they were going to block for me, and the snap and the hold were going to be good, so I just had to do my job.”

“It means everything that I was able to support my team the way they have supported me,” she said. “From the players to the coaches to the school, everybody has completely supported me through my entire journey to my senior year.

“I’m so glad I could experience this one tonight.”

Texas…what a wild place.  It’s like its own planet down there.  The only place that could produce not only a beautiful homecoming queen, but one that can throw on shoulder pads and hop in a football game to kick the game winning field goal.  A real life Get You A Woman Who Can Do Both situation.  And this ain’t like, your local public school in Connecticut.  This is Texas.  Where football is king.  Where even like specialty schools with student bodies of 90 are fielding state championship worthy football teams.  It’s no easy feat to suit up for a team down there, with 92% of the state’s high school teams entering a game with the Cleveland Browns as 1.5 point favorites [Source: Elias Sports Bureau].  Let alone go 5-5 in PATs and 30 yard game winner.
