Veep Is Ending This Year After Its Seventh Season
(Variety) – The seventh season of “Veep” will be the last for the HBO comedy. “The decision to bring VEEP to a close at the end of next season is bittersweet,” said Casey Bloys, president, HBO Programming. “We love the show and everyone involved but respect the producers’ choice to bring Selina Meyer’s journey to its conclusion after an extraordinary run of critical and award-winning acclaim. Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ comedic brilliance infused Selina with a dynamic presence and a vibrant wit which will ensure her a place in the history of television’s most iconic comedic characters. We look forward to producing the seventh and final season.”
This is devastating. Veep is somehow one of the most decorated comedies I can recall and also one of the most underrated. Want to see their Emmy wins?
Not bad.
Care to take a gander at the nominations?
14 Emmy wins and 49 Emmy nominations (counting the wins, of course). I’d argue that’s legitimately disgusting for a show that’s been on television for only six seasons. I’d also argue that Sunny should’ve gotten the nod in a few of its spots but that’s a different conversation.
Yet, despite this abhorrent wealth of trophies, I still feel like it’s never talked about. It seems like only diehard TV watchers (21st century nerds) mention it among the greats. That’s a shame because it’s one of the most well-written and well-constructed shows on television. The amount of jokes they squeeze into their 30 minutes is downright incredible, but that’s because Veep is put together like an OCD bathroom: everything has its place and its there for a reason. Every word is perfectly chosen and perfectly delivered.
Why this announcement particularly sucks is because it means that shortly we will most likely have no Veep and no Sunny, by far the two funniest shows on television. Sunny is in a state of limbo where it seems like they’re doing another season they just don’t know when and Veep is opting to go out on top rather than limp to the end, as so many shows do. An honorable and respectable move, no doubt, but it still bums me out. I don’t even know what shows can fill their shoes. I’m Sorry is great and You’re the Worst is too, but Sunny and Veep have been mainstays for a decade. I can’t think of any other shows that were doing the kind of stuff those guys did on remotely the same plane. It’s gonna suck. Just a world without laughter that’s full of suck.
And also no Game of Thrones for like 100 years. (frown face)
