The Handmaid's Tale Is Really Good

One of the things I do best in the world is lie on my back. Lie on my back and watch TV, you filthy animals. Which is exactly what I did yesterday – while the rest of the world stayed productive and contributed to society, I ordered Seamless from two different places at the same time and watched 7 straight hours of “The Handmaid’s Tale” on Hulu. The show has Black Mirror-ish vibes, portraying a dystopian future where people are becoming less and less fertile and the human race is basically going extinct so a radical regime takes over and implements a totally crazy system involving kidnapping, rape, and cattle prods. Still not sold? Well, I don’t know what to tell you because if you’re not going to watch a show for the reasons I just listed, you’ll probably hate this one. Personally, I’d be in at Black Mirror-ish vibes.

The show got me to thinking: In all honesty, as a species, we might not be far from what The Handmaid’s Tale is suggesting. With birth rates declining and less people having sex than ever and Japan selling more adult diapers than baby ones, it doesn’t seem totally impossible. Which brings out the existentialist in me – if the human race isn’t even going to continue for much longer, what is even the point of anything? What am I conserving water and quitting cigarettes and using eco-friendly all purpose cleaning spray for? If humans start seriously dying out in my lifetime, I will be so pissed I spent so much time separating the recyclables from the non-recyclables. And while we’re at it, why am I eating kale worrying about finding a mate to procreate with, I could’ve been eating carbs in my pajamas and doing heroin this whole time.

Anyway. Watch the show, it’s really good.
