"Walkers" Potato Chips Online Promotion Lets You Tweet In A Selfie To Be Featured In Their Ads Annnnnd It's Promptly Full Of All Serial Killers and Child Molesters
This is it. My favorite thing. I finally narrowed it down. My very favorite thing in the world is companies trying to be hip, cool and with it and appeal to younger crowds through social media and having it absolutely explode in their face.
If you couldn’t piece it together from the tweets above, Walkers chips (never heard of them before, but I sure have now!) tweeted out a contest this morning: send a selfie along with the promotional hashtag, and be entered to win UEFA Champions League Final tickets while also having your picture populated into an empty frame held by Gary Lineker.
Now I know what you’re thinking. Hey, I’ve read the internet before! I have a computer and I have opened up a browser once, so I know exactly how this will end! I know, me too. But Walkers Chips is in a tough spot because apparently the person they hired to do their PR and social media has not. They learned the hard way that when you ask the internet for things and then leave the results in the hands of an auto bot, you end up with convicted serial killers and child molesters in big framed photos advertising your potato chips.
It’s a bad look, sure. But some schools of thought would say even bad PR is good PR. Like I said, I had never heard of Walkers before. But now every time I see a picture of Chris Benoit, I won’t just think “double-murder suicide,” I’ll think of a delicious bag of crisps.
