Is Wearing A Seatbelt In A Cab A Weird Move?

I’m a big seatbelt guy. My old man drilled into my head at a young age how dangerous driving is and I’ve taken that very seriously ever since. I don’t let people ride in my car without buckling up. Ever. Never. I’ll stop the vehicle. It’s not that I don’t trust myself driving. I’m perfect. It’s that 90% of everyone else on the road is a fucking idiot. Liabilities everywhere. Hazards left and right, front and back. Most people in general are careless morons and the road only magnifies that fact.

So I buckle up. It does not make you invincible but it sure does minimize your chances of severe injury when something inevitably goes wrong out there. I think seatbelts in normal people cars is universally accepted as a good and common thing. No issue there.

It’s when you get into cabs that the water muddies. Is it weird to buckle up? When I hop into a cab with people and click myself in they look at me like I’m an alien. Like the rules of the road and physics and human bodily injury don’t exist inside cabs. Like I’m a freak. Total Will Ferrell in NYC in Elf situation. That “be more from Missouri dude” look.

So the question is: Is it a weird ass move to buckle up in a cab? To me it’s a no-brainer, you click in. A car is a car. Cabbies are professional drivers but they’re also psychopaths. I still can’t tell if they’re the best or worst drivers I’ve ever seen and I’m not putting my life on the line to figure out which. Safety first, all day every day. Normal people cars or cabbies.

PS — My case:

PPS — Is there anything more awkward than when you don’t buckle up in the first minute or two in a friend’s car and then you go for it and they can hear you clicking in after they’ve been driving for a few minutes? Basically screaming “holy shit you suck at driving let me buckle up so I don’t die” in their face.
