Wake Up With Fred McGriff Hitting Two Bombs On Opening Day (1995)
We’re less than two weeks away from Opening Day, and you can never go wrong with a little Crime Dog throwback, so here we have the man himself launching a couple bombs on Opening Day for the eventual World Series champion Atlanta Braves. I was about to say that I’m still “irrationally” upset that Fred McGriff isn’t a Hall of Famer, but the more I think of it, I don’t think it’s irrational at all to be pissed about that. The man played 19 seasons, hit 493 homers, and had a career OPS+ of 134. For comparisons’s sake, Hall of Famer Eddie Murray had a career OPS+ of 129, and hit 504 home runs. Murray was a first-ballot Hall of Famer with 85.3% of the vote, while 2017 was the Crime Dog’s 8th year on the ballot, earning just 21.7% of the vote. Is wins above replacement really keeping McGriff out of Cooperstown? Shit ain’t right.
