Darrelle Revis Puts it on the Jets to Handle Him 'with Class'

.

NY Post - [Darrelle] Revis, in no uncertain terms, told The Post on Thursday he wants to retire as a Jet. He said he has no plans to look around the stadium wistfully Sunday as if it might be the end for him with the franchise that made him a first-round draft pick in 2007 and made him a multi-millionaire.

“Would I love to be here? Yes,” Revis said in an exclusive locker-room sit-down with The Post. “Will I be back? That’s a great question. My thing would be this: Do the New York Jets want to treat my situation with class or no class? With me being one of the best players in the history of this franchise, do they want me to retire here or not retire here? …

“So, I’ve done enough. Obviously, everybody’s a little bit concerned because that’s not what I’m displaying anymore. I can’t stay 24 [years old] forever. Every player ages in this game. You’ve got to understand that.

“Now, can I still play? Yes, I can still play. This game is a love for me. It’s like a girlfriend. And we’ve been dating for a long time — many years. She’s been great to me and I appreciate it. I love my girlfriend.”

The New York Jets are football’s Jelly of the Month Club. The gift that keeps giving the whole year.

Congratulations to Gang Green. This is what tampering with Darrelle Revis while he was under contract to the Patriots got them. Roger Goodell was an unindicted co-conspirator in the heist, fining them a measly $100,000 for tampering with a supposed first ballot Hall of Famer. Whereas the Chiefs had to give up two draft picks for talking to Jeremy frigging Maclin during the “legal” tampering period. Without even signing him. But in Revis’ case, getting him – for $39 million guaranteed – turned out to be worse punishment than anything an honest commissioner could’ve handed out.

I’m not even hating on Revis. Good for him. He’s maybe the best businessman in the history of the NFL. He should run the NFLPA someday. And all his bellyaching about “class” and overconfidence in his own skills? That’s not on him. That’s on the Jets themselves. They turned him into an ego monster, with all that “Revis Island” nonsense and renegotiating his deal every other month. The team built this Frankenstein, so they shouldn’t be surprised when he busts loose and rampages through the village.

Here’s a fun fact to put into perspective what Revis is “displaying” right now. There were seasons where opposing quarterbacks had a combined passer rating in the 60s. This year? It’s 109. And the Jets have faced QBs like Josh McCown, Case Keenum and Colin Kaepernick. Meaning Revis has turned those guys, plus your Andy Daltons, Tyrod Taylors and Ryan Tannehills and combined made them look like 2016 Tom Brady. Sure, he still loves his girlfriend. But he’s let himself go, packed on 100 pounds, quit all personal grooming, sits around in a bathrobe and gets high all day. And he still expects her to look at him like the stud he was at 24. It couldn’t happen to a better team.
