The Westworld Season Finale Was Damn Near Perfect

Before I get into this there are two housecleaning items to get out of the way:

1. I’m sorry I wasn’t on this earlier and pimping it. When I moved to NYC I fell behind on like all TV and didn’t even have a chance to start Westworld until Thanksgiving. I’m here to own that, that’s on me. But now, I give it the very highest of recommendations. I thought I was a fan before, but after last night I have truly awaken (just a little Westworld humor, we like to have fun here.)

2. I’m not gonna get too in-depth with theories or anything right now. Part of being late to the game is you don’t have time to pour over reddit theories while pretending to work for hours on end. I did the first eight episodes very quickly and then went into the last two bareback and haven’t read anything from last night either. But, if I may pat my back for a second, I was all-in on William being the Man in Black and suspected that Dolores might be Wyatt.

Having said all that, can we take a second and give those 90 minutes of television a standing ovation, please? Just fucking beautiful stuff, really.

In this day and age everyone loves to get incredibly artsy with their finales and just not answer fucking anything that the viewers were questioning then the writers explain it away in a post-show show by saying shit like, “Sometimes life doesn’t have all the answers.” You’re right, life doesn’t, my goddamn TV shows should.

That’s what Westworld did so perfectly last night. The action was great (the escape scene was fucking awesome), the shots and music were beautiful as always, and the acting was excellent. But the perfect little bow that the writers put on the season, while still ramping up excitement for the next one (which won’t be until 2018) was truly special. We found out about William/Man in Black, about Dolores/Wyatt, about what “the maze” really meant, and about what both Arnold’s and Ford’s goals really were. All the shit we wanted to find out, we did. Still though, the writers managed to keep enough mystery for next year.

We don’t know what is going to happen in the world going forward, though it seems William finally has the game he’s been dying to play, but we understand everything that’s in the past. That’s all you can ask for a finale and these days you rarely get it.
