BI - BuzzFeed has a new plan to make money: selling merchandise produced by its illustrators and designers. Shop BuzzFeed might look like a swag shop only meant for superfans, but Tessa Gould, BuzzFeed’s head of commerce, told Poynter that it’s actually an important part of BuzzFeed’s money-making strategy. Gould described the effort as part of a new “proactive” commerce strategy, in contrast to a “passive” one which simply relies on revenue-generating links to sites like Amazon. Gould and a small team have been pursuing this since January.

Ain’t no fun when the rabbit got the gun huh Buzzfeed. See here is the thing Buzzfeed. While you were compiling the world’s biggest repository of junk with clickbait articles and fancy algorithms we were building this thing brick by brick. While you had articles on “20 things you should do after you knit a sweater” Barstool grew by word of mouth. We built a foundation that a tornado couldn’t blow over. Solid to the core. Real readers. Real connection. And I knew as long as we had that loyal, engaged audience I could sell the fuck out of them. Ball Don’t Lie Tshirts on top of Ball Don’t Lie Tshirts. Now Buzzfeed is treading water. The paper tiger is being exposed. They are backed into a corner and their last resort as always is “let’s do what Pageviews does”. But it’s too late. People don’t care about Buzzfeed and you can’t sell shit to people who don’t care. That’s slinging merch 101. Its all happening! It’s all coming up Pageviews!
