Mashable – While most classmates dressed up in traditional costumes representing different cultural backgrounds for Culture Day, Josh Welch dressed up as a thief – representing white people stealing other cultures.

Welch, a senior at Springbrook High School in Maryland, shared a photo of his costume on Twitter.

“I got the idea browsing the internet looking for a comedic outfit for a costume, and the idea just hit me,” Welch wrote to Mashable.

“I’ve been taken aback by the criticism but the positive response has outweighed the negative,” Welch said. “I’m a huge activist against social injustice and was shocked and glad my tweet had such a huge response!”

Taken aback by the criticism? It’s honestly like seeing this kid with Stockholm Syndrome with social injustice activism. There’s nothing wrong with recognizing life isn’t fair for some in statistically noticeable ways and doing what you can to make that known. But this weird racial cuckolding going on here is just kinda sad. White people have certainly lifted generously from other cultures over the years but so have other cultures with white people. That’s the whole thing about this country, that “melting pot” approach that we’ve harped on for centuries now. It’s a two way cultural exchange that’s made America the unique place it is today, mostly for the better and sometimes for the worse. But people apologetic and bending over for things you had nothing to do with…it’s just needy and sad. You’re not suddenly the “cool white guy who totally gets it” because you did this. You’re just a dude trying way too hard and acting like you owe people something instead of treating them as equals.

That said, I honestly don’t even know what a good costume for “generic white kid” culture would be even if the bar is pretty low thanks to this kid. Maybe just chug Mountain Dew and drop n-bombs on people on Xbox Live? More of an attitude than a costume at that point but Culture Day really should keep an open mind since that’s sort of the point of the whole thing.

PS Hilarious that I get paid to write a blog shittalking a cornball high school kid, that point is not lost on me.
