Buffalo News Reporter, Mike Harrington, Is Mad Online About Jimmy Vesey Signing In New York
After a summer of speculation and two whole days of meetings with NHL GMs, players, and coaches Jimmy Vesey did the unthinkable and excercised his rights as a free agent and decided to sign with the New York Rangers instead of the Buffalo Sabres who held his draft rights. #NotCool.
I want you to close your eyes and picture the guy who wrote this article. Okay, was it this?
Very good guess. It wasn’t PFT though. Try again.
Mike Harrington did the impossible. He was so mad online in such a stereotypical crusty curmudgeon old guy media fashion that it’s impossible to parody him. It was a combination of someone like Lupica and Michael Scott. Let me ask you guys a question; do you think tampering is cool? Do you think doing alcohol is cool? Because it’s not. Its #NotCool
Now, there isn’t a phrase I hate more than “hot take”. Any time anyone says anything people call it a hot take. Having said that…our Boy Mikey Harrington lit his computer on fire with gems in just about every paragraph.
“The thing that jumped out at me was that they came to really want me,” Vesey said of the Rangers during a conference call Friday night. “It seemed that they really needed to have me in their lineup and it seemed that they believe in me. That was something that I was looking for.”
Is he serious? Did this kid go to Harvard or not? What a ridiculous thing to say. Every team Vesey talked to clearly wanted him and had a need in their lineup. How in the world is what the Rangers said to him any different than anybody else?
Hey Jimmy, I thought Harvard grads were supposed to be smart. Boom roasted
Vesey, remember, had 24 goals and 40 points in his first two years combined at Harvard. He didn’t give up NHL money to keep going to school, as you keep hearing on social media. He wasn’t even an NHL prospect when he started his junior year.
Jimmy, you lied about why you wanted a Harvard degree and even though you got drafted as an 18 year-old nobody thought you were an NHL prospect.
In this view, he should have signed with the Predators, the team that drafted him and spent a lot of time and money developing him. The Preds were giving him a top-three line spot last spring and into the Stanley Cup playoffs and he turned them down. They will be one of the top choices in the Western Conference this season. Turning down Nashville and signing with New York shows this wasn’t about winning at all.
Jimmy, if you cared about winning you would’ve signed with the team that drafted you that has never been to the Finals. You’re selfish.
Who does this kid think he is? He’s not Eric Lindros, who was a No. 1 overall pick. And save for Eichel and Johnny Gaudreau, the list of Hobey Baker winners the last 15 years is littered with mostly nobodies.
Jimmy, other than your rights what gives you the right to decide where you should earn a living? Pretty egostical. Also, a quick google search will tell you that while some players end up being great, many others don’t. Something to think about.
And now what happens to future college players? What NHL team is going to let a draft pick play out his senior year? The pressure is going to be immense on kids to turn pro, lest they go and “pull a Vesey”
Jimmy, think about the example you’re setting for the kids next time. SMH.
Bravo, Mike Harrington. Finally, a media member with the guts to tell it like it is and tell other people how to live their lives. Refreshing.
