DM- A man on the run for 40 years after a deadly attack in Florida evaded capture in a mundane manner, according to authorities and friends. He got married, settled in the quiet town of Reidsville, North Carolina, and ran a wallpaper store in Greensboro. People said the man they knew as James Emmet Manion and his wife were cordial but quiet, blending into the community of about 14,000 near the Virginia border.  He made sure his dog Prancer received regular haircuts, voted Republican in several elections and was seen working in his tree-shaded yard. ‘I couldn’t say enough nice things about both of them. There was never an inkling of anything amiss,’ said Preston Trigg, who grew up in Reidsville and kept in touch with the couple after he helped sell them his mother’s house in 2002. But the life of James Manion was part of a long deception dating back to a violent 1977 crime in Florida, according to the FBI. The fugitive — whose real name is William Claybourne Taylor — was the triggerman in an attempt to assassinate the then-mayor of the city of Williston, Eugene Bailey, authorities said. The mayor was wounded but another government official, former Immigration and Naturalization official Walter Scott, died in the attack.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. There needs to be an expiration date on stuff like this. If the FBI can’t catch a fugitive over X amount of years, the charges should be dropped. 25 years sounds about right. We’ll give the FBI 25 years to catch a fugitive. If they can’t, that’s on them and the fugitive is no longer a fugitive. He’s now just a regular citizen. Take this William Claybourne Taylor for instance. Should he not have attempted to assassinate a mayor and accidentally killed another government official in the process? Yes. That was wrong. But he was 27 at the time! People change. I’m 27 now. Am I gonna be the same person when I’m 67? Of course not. Hell, when I look back at the person I was when 22 I barely recognize that lunatic and that was just 5 years ago. We’re talking 40 years! This guy has been on the run and crime-free for longer than he was alive at the time of the crime he committed. Again, shooting people is bad. But that’s water under the bridge. Let this guy live out his years running a wallpaper store in North Carolina.
