Lena Dunham Says That Serving Sushi In The Cafeteria Dining Hall At College Is "Cultural Appropriation"

Page Six – Actress Lena Dunham is standing — and eating — in solidarity with whiny students from her ultra-liberal alma mater, who protested this year that Oberlin College was “insensitive” for serving “culturally appropriated” food in its dining halls. The “Girls” star — who graduated from the exclusive liberal arts school in 2008 — said students are indeed justified in picking a food fight, Food & Wine magazine reported. “There are now big conversations at Oberlin, where I went to college, about cultural appropriation and whether the dining hall sushi and banh mi disrespect certain cuisines. ?The press reported it as, ‘How crazy are Oberlin kids?’ But to me, it was actually, ‘Right on,’” Dunham told the magazine. Gastronomically correct students at the Ohio college protested in November that phony dining hall versions of the ethnic cuisine are slap in the face to people from those countries. “The undercooked rice and lack of fresh fish is disrespectful,” Tomoyo Joshi, a junior from Japan, wrote in the school paper, The Review. “When you’re cooking a country’s dish for other people, including ones who have never tried the original dish before, you’re also representing the meaning of the dish as well as its culture. So if people not from that heritage take food, modify it and serve it as ‘authentic,’ it is appropriative.” Diep Nguyen, a student from Vietnam complained, “It was ridiculous … How could they just throw out something completely different and label it as another country’s traditional food?” Oberlin students followed up with a campus protest.

I gotta be perfectly honest, I dont understand cultural appropriation. I’ve seen the term thrown around so much its just white noise now. I roll my eyes. Maybe there is some significance behind it but people like Lena Dunham and her band of protesters have cried wolf so often I just dont care anymore. Sorry to anybody who stands for putting an end to true cultural appropriation (right? you guys want to end it? Like I said I dont know. Dont really care) but you can blame Lena Dunham for that.

I can understand when black people see a white person making music that is traditionally “theirs,” wearing clothes that belong to “them,” acting a certain way and adopting a certainly style thats typically black, and then making a shit ton of money off it. I can understand black people being like “we’ve been doing that shit forever and some white people jack it from us and get rich?” 100% understand that. To be honest, as an average white guy, sometimes it sounds almost more racist to me. It comes off to me as black people should do black things, white people should do white things, etc etc which sounds a lot a bit like a thing called “segregation” to me. But I also can imagine how frustrating it would be to have certain elements of your culture jacked and exploited and capitalized on when a lot of people in your race/ethnicity/whatever havent ever benefitted from the things they created.

But complaining that the ethnic food in your cafeteria sucks? Now that, I dont know (Foxy Brown voice from Sunshine) Cafeteria food of all fucking kinds SUCK at college. I went to college at Fordham. We had Sodexho cater our shit. We all found out half way through our tenure there that we had the same dining package as some prisons, also catered by Sodexho. The mere mention of the word Sodexho gives me diarrhea. I’ve pooped 3 times in this paragraph alone. The American food sucked, the Asian food sucked, the everything food sucked. Morning noon and night, everything minus the waffles fucking sucked. It wasnt a racial thing. It wasnt a “culturally insensitive” thing. Its a fucking MONEY thing you goddam idiots. You want fresh sushi and goddam samurai’s rolling your sushi every day? Tell mommy and daddy paying your tuition to cut a bigger check. Dont want to be strapped with even worse amounts of college debt? Then eat this shitty food and realize you get what you pay for and quit your goddam crying. If I went to school in Vietnam I wouldnt expect a perfectly cooked cheeseburger. As a matter of fact I went to school in America and didnt expect a perfectly cooked cheeseburger. So where do you get off thinking you’re getting 5 star Sashimi in between your 11:30 and 2:30 during your four years of sex drugs and naps?

Fuck outta here, Lena Dunham. Get lost, Vietnamese crybabies. If complaining that your sushi isnt good is cultural appropriation then your whole movement is a joke.
