We Just Witnessed One Of The Best National Lacrosse Championship Games Ever
Incredible. Unbelievable. It was the type of game that will be talked about for years to come. The North Carolina Tar Heels, a team that was on the bubble come Selection Sunday a few weeks ago, are your 2016 NCAA champions and what a way to make it happen. That game had everything you are looking for in an instant classic. There was chaos, there was drama, there were some huge goals scored and there were some even bigger saves…
This was one of the better years in college lacrosse history so it’s only fitting the final game of the season was the best. It was a game of runs to say the least. Carolina opened up scoring the first 4 goals of the game, including this one from Chris Cloutier just big boy-ing his way through the entire Terps defense…
Then Maryland went on a little run of their own, thanks largely in part to Philly native Matt Rambo showing why he’s one of the best players in division one lacrosse.
Teams traded some goals after that for the rest of the game. There were a few moments of undisciplined lacrosse leading to some questionable penalties. We had overtime and we had a Backwards Hat Breschi sighting.
I know the Chris Cloutier goals was what sealed the deal for the Heels but let’s be honest with each other; Breschi going backwards hat was the true moment which the game was over. Right now think we’re all just working off pure adrenaline from that game. There were moments that the offense took over, moments that the goalies took over, moments that the special teams took over. Like I said before, this game had it all and we’re all hashtag blessed to be alive to see it. So now North Carolina becomes the first ever unseeded team in NCAA DI lacrose history to win the national championship. UNC also becomes the first school since Princeton back in the 90s to win botht he men’s and women’s national championship in the same year. And now Maryland becomes the Buffalo Bills of college lacrosse as their title drought dating back to the 70s is still on. They lost in 2012, they lost in 2015, they lost today. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Tough time to be a terp. Now hit it, coach.
