Rational Thoughts About The Eagles Trading Up To The #2 Pick

Mood:

Yeah, I just compared myself to Denzel Washington, what are you going to do about it? Now onto the Eagles.

So as I predicted beautifully yesterday, the Eagles dropped the bombshell of all bombshells in the middle of the afternoon right on my drive home from college. Anyway, I have had a few hours of napping and eating PJ’s wings (Hot and honey of course) to clear my mind and make some sense of what happened.

Let’s break it down

Eagles get:

2016 2nd overall pick (Carson Wentz.. We will get to him)

2017 4th-round pick

Browns get:

2016 eighth-overall pick

2016 third-round pick

2016 fourth-round pick

2017 first-round pick

2018 second-pick

Let’s state the obvious: that is a boat load to give up. I am not going to sit here and say it’s not, but I am also not going to sit here and act like the world is crumbling like some Eagles fans (I am looking at you, Smitty). The Eagles have only been in the top-10 in the draft twice since 1999, where they took Corey Simon and Lane Johnson (Drafted McNabb the year before Simon and the QB class was worse than an eight year old Johnson’s year). They haven’t had the chance to take a crucial, possible franchise QB in almost 20 years. After they moved up to 8 by trading Kiko and Maxwell, the Eagles I think found themselves in striking distance and made the most of it, something you can not blame them for doing.

To the deal itself: Yes, it is a lot of picks, granted the third round pick this year is not even ours that we gave up and they staggered the rest of the picks. When rumors broke this week about us getting whacked back to back years for firsts and thirds in the early stages of this dealing being worked out, I was livid. However Howie, who everyone loves to hate, struck gold again. By staggering it out to 2018, it allows the Eagles to still possibly get two bona fide starters in round two and three next year and then another in 2018 when they give up just that second round pick. Yes, this year the Eagles will get hit hard in the draft, but with key acquisitions on the Oline and the secondary, Howie has filled those needs. The big thing is that after LA made their move last week, you know the Eagles were chomping at the bit to make theirs and now that they did, you must realize it might be for a player who might be the star of this team for the next 15-20 years. You might raise your kids cheering for this guy (or he turns out to be a bust and I murder myself). The price was a lot to some people, but these are deals you must make if you want to go and get what you think is your franchise QB.

Now what the hell to do about Bradford and Daniel?

This is strange but try to stay with me. I honestly think they resigned Bradford thinking Wentz/Goff were out of the question, but as they traded with Miami to creep up 8, i think they realized they had a legit chance to get one of their guys either at 8 or by trading up again. They now find themselves in a situation where they have 3 QBS: one being a rookie you traded a good portion of your future away for, and two other guys that are getting paid starter money. For the Eagles, the will play the waiting game. See if the Broncos need Bradford or possibly another team after a QB goes down in the preseason, if not Bradford will trot out there for week one and if he plays well… hell, he might just play well enough to get a third or fourth rounder back for him in a trade deadline like deal if the Eagles suck enough. If not? You cut him in the offseason and ride your brand new shiny toy named Carson Wentz into the sunset.

As for Wentz himself, I will have more on him next week. Going into the film room now to watch him throw for the next forty hours and I plan on listening to the NDSU fight song until my ears bleed. Early reports are that he is like Ben Roethlisberger and I fucking love Ben Roethlisberger.
