SnapChat's 4/20 Filter Makes You A Blackface Bob Marley

I’m actually offended by this filter. No not for the same reason 95% of Twitter is right now. I’m offended because I’m a Citizen of the Internet in the year 2016, and somebody who gets paid to work at a $16 billion company thought this was a good idea and approved it without anticipating any sort of backlash. Like they are shocked this is happening. Releasing statements about the Bob Marley estate blah blah

“The lens we launched today was created in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, and gives people a new way to share their appreciation for Bob Marley and his music. Millions of Snapchatters have enjoyed Bob Marley’s music, and we respect his life and achievements.”

Seriously the only explanation for this is somebody emerged from a doomsday bomb shelter this morning, learned what the internet was in a 30 minute crash course then designed and uploaded this filter. That’s the only way you could be this dumb.

I mean let’s count the ways you’re going to outrage the internet. 1, basically digital blackface, which is like the #1 no-no. 2, associating Bob Marley with 4/20 as if he’s only known for being a pothead – that’s going to cover a lot of bases, like Marley fanboys, potheads, reggae fans, the Jamaican community.

So you basically set yourself up to get destroyed by everyone who uses your product who isn’t an apathetic white person. Hilarious business decision.

And SnapChat releasing a statement

“The lens we launched today was created in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, and gives people a new way to share their appreciation for Bob Marley and his music. Millions of Snapchatters have enjoyed Bob Marley’s music, and we respect his life and achievements.”
