Mets Sign The Corpse Of Asdrubal Cabrera Presumably To Back Up The Corpse Of David Wright

And just like that…in one fell swoop…the Mets took their mediocre middle infield, completely overhauled it, and now have a completely different mediocre middle infield for 2016! From Murphy and Flores to Walker and Cabrera, the Mets are back!

I’m kidding. Kind of. Neil Walker is definitely a solid replacement at second base. Cabrera, as much as he sucks, is sadly almost an upgrade over the Flores/Tejada combo, or at best a wash. He had 28 doubles and 15 homers last year. His glove sucks but so does Flores’. Major difference being Droopy is obviously old and Billy Flowers is just 23. So there’s a couple ways you can look at it. A lot of Mets fans were pleased with the moves talking about the depth they’ve added. With David Wright eternally injured now, theres no doubt hes going to miss a lot of time and now some combination of Cabrera/Flores/I guess potentially Tejada can play 3rd in his stead. Which is definitely not wrong. That can and probably will happen. But I dont like this idea that the Mets infield is now “deep.” Yea, theres a lot of names and a lot of options to throw at 2nd, short, and 3B. But none are really that good. Especially defensively. Flores and Cabrera arent even good defensively at their natural positions, let alone third. I mean of course I understand that now we never have to see Eric Campbell again. And if you’re telling me Cabrera is just a DW backup, OK that works. I’m not overly excited about the left side of the infield featuring some combo of Asdrubal Cabrera, a DW Corpse and Wilmer Flores but its not necessarily a bad thing. I’m just not high fiving my buddy that the Mets went out and got Asdrubal Cabrera.

I’d love for this to be more of this is a precursor to a bigger deal, but I dont think it can be. Right now you’ve got Walker/Herrara/Wilmer/Cabrera/Wright to fill 2nd short and third, which seems like someone can be moved. But with Cabrera running in sand at shortstop, Herrara still like 17 years old, and David Wright an enormous question mark, I guess we’re not really in any position to do so. A package of Flores + Wheeler almost netted a pretty big bat at the deadline…I’d love to move that same package again, but I suppose it would have to net someone who can fill that hole at short.  Really when you get down to it, David Wright being a 150 million dollar couple-times-a-week player is going to be a real pain in the fucking ass. Kind of ruins any flexibility the Mets have with this “depth.” Just chalk up Cabrera to a 19 million dollar spinal stenosis safety net and hope the Mets fill bigger needs in other ways.
