Hook EmBevo XIV, the recognizable University of Texas mascot, will not attend Saturday’s Oklahoma game in Dallas due to a life-threatening condition being monitored by veterinarians, the school announced.

Ricky Brennes, the executive director of the Silver Spurs Alumni Association, declined to comment about the situation when reached Wednesday by the American-Statesman.

Bevo XIV has served as the university’s mascot since 2004. The current longhorn steer, which stood on the sideline for some of the biggest wins over the last decade, weighs 2,100 pounds and has a horn span measuring 82 inches tip to tip.

Bevo XIV’s current record stands at 106-41.

“Bevo is a fighter, a symbol of strength and who fans across the world care deeply about,” Brennes said in a statement released by school officials. “We are carefully monitoring Bevo’s condition at this time and will update the public as we find out more about his condition.”

There you have it. A horrible season goes from bad to worse. Charlie Strong literally killed Bevo. Well maybe not literally, but if you think a 1-4 start to the season didn’t contribute to some serious health issues for the team’s #1 superfan, you don’t know how the body works. I mean the dude saw 25 wins in the first 26 games he went to. He was there for the 2005 Rose Bowl. He was at freaking George W’s second inauguration. He’s had a charmed life in the college sports world and now he’s stuck dealing with this shit:

That’s enough to break down even the strongest steer.

And not to be insensitive but it’s a point that needs raising – could the death of Bevo serve as a little bit of inspiration for the Longhorns? Maybe snap them out of their funk and actually play some decent football? I mean the way things have been going around that program there’s like a 99% chance his passing will be in vain, so not holding my breath. But…maybe.
