Football Guy: Joe Mazzulla Found The Perfect Way To Call Out The NBA's Terrible Officiating By Embracing His Inner Mike Vrabel
Boston Globe. Getty Images. If there's one thing that 99.9% of NBA fanbases can agree with, it's that the NBA's officiating is complete horseshit. Sorry for being vulger, but it's true. Every night all across the league we see more and more instances of NBA refs being completely incompetent. Unless you're the Lakers or SGA, you know what I'm talking about. The worst part of course, is that they're never held accountable for their ineptitude. In fact, they get rewarded. Tony Brothers does NBA Finals games, that's all you really need to know.
Because of this, players and coaches need to be careful when trying to voice their frustration. It's a fine line to walk when you know that nothing you say will change things and really, the most likely outcome is you having to cut a massive check to the league office all because you were telling the truth. I don't care how much money you make, nobody wants to be writing that check.
At the same time, you need to get your point across when things are a bit ridiculous. For example, Jaylen Brown doing nothing but attacking the rim all night, yet being rewarded with only 4 FTA. Yet, on the other end of the floor, everything is a touch foul. I really do think this is the foundation of most fanbase's frustration with NBA officiating. It's just not consistent. Things are often allowed on one end of the floor that are not allowed on the other, which is bullshit. Either call it for both or don't call it for both, seems pretty simple to me.
So how did Joe Mazzulla decide to get his point across while avoiding a fine? In a way I don't think we've ever seen before from an NBA coach
Referencing the tackle by Donte DiVincenzo on Derrick White that wasn't called, Joe Mazzulla said. "It was first and 10, one of their guys had a great tackle on Derrick there on the sideline for a tackle for loss. That was really good by them so our offensive line's gotta do a better job of winning in the trenches. Our offensive line has to be better. We can't get dominated in the trenches." #Celtics #Timberwolves
What an answer. Seeing that tweet come across my timeline didn't do it justice. I needed to see the video too
The play this is referencing, is below
Pretty sure you can't do that in basketball, but I can't say for sure. Football? Different story. And you know what? I love this approach by Joe. He's making his point perfectly, having some fun, and avoiding that pricey check for his troubles.

Boston Globe. Getty Images. If we can be serious here for a second, it's true that so far this season, the Celts' whistle has been horrendous. Their 3s are down, they're attacking more than ever, yet they're the only team in the NBA averaging under 20 FTA a game. Jaylen Brown called out the bullshit after an admitted blown call cost the Celts a win against the Jazz, and it's almost like the entire team has been paying the price ever since. They've lost the FTA battle in something like 18 of their 19 so far games this season, which is virtually impossible. Yet for them, it's their reality and it doesn't seem like it's changing anytime soon, regardless of how the team plays.
So Joe is right to call things out, and I like that he did it in a way we've never really seen before. It was a nice opportunity for a laugh after the Celts dropped a very winnable game against the Wolves all because they decided to not make a single shot for an entire half after scoring 69 points in the first 24 minutes, but we'll dive into more about that tomorrow.
For now, I am once again begging Adam Silver to fix his officiating problem, but deep down I know he won't.
