FX Is Making A 'Far Cry' Adaptation That Will Be Directed By An Odd Duo
As a fan of (some) of the games, this setup looks pretty ideal for me. If you've never played, the idea is basic. It's a first person shooter where, in each game, you play as a new character who is thrown into a new world that is some sort of lawless warzone. There's usually a main quest and a bunch of fun side stuff you can do.
There are three things that make me excited about this. The first is that they're doing this anthology style. This is structurally correct, allowing you to basically do a high-octane 'White Lotus' across the globe. The second is that Noah Hawley is a fantastic showrunner. Not only did he make of the best anthology shows ever in 'Fargo', but I also (mostly) liked 'Alien: Earth'. Obviously both of those were for FX as well, so the marriage here is working. Lastly, these are very cinematic games already that have featured really solid actors. The villain featured in that embedded tweet, Michael Mando, was a star in 'Better Call Saul'. Giancarlo Esposito(Breaking Bad) also had a run as did Greg Byrk (A History of Violence).
The wildcard here is Rob "Mac"(side note, are we really still doing that???). Part of it makes sense. He is a darling for FX, has a passion for video games and starred in a pretty good show about the industry in 'Mythic Quest'. Stylistically, though, Hawley and him have very different styles of humor. Now, humor isn't the backbone of these games, but it is important.
Regardless, I'm excited to see what this group can do with this property. Especially after my fears with an RPG-turned-story were put to rest with 'Fallout'.
