Dirk Nowitzki Didn't Hold Back And Had The Perfect Response To The Firing Of Nico Harrison
Tim Heitman. Getty Images. There has been no shortage of takes when it comes to the whole Nico Harrison disaster following the Mavs' decision to finally move on and give the people of Dallas what they've been calling for since February. Whether you think this was all Nico's doing or that he's actually a scapegoat for an ownership group that was really the driving force behind the Luka Trade, if there's one opinion on the matter that I'm interested in hearing, it's Dirk.
You know, the living Mavs legend and one of the best players to ever play the sport of basketball. You may remember when this whole thing went down back in February, we had Dirk becoming a Laker fan just so he could go out and support his friend instead of going to watch the Mavs
so I think it's safe to say he and Nico Harrison probably didn't see eye to eye. So, following Nico getting canned, I was curious what Dirk would say because you knew he would be asked about it on his show.
What a response. Dare I say, a perfect response? Calm, measured, not overly dramatic or hyperbolic. Dirk just being open and honest and telling it like it is. I would only imagine Mavs fans feel the same way as Dirk, which is why it resonates. Dirk IS the Mavs. Nobody cares about that team more than him, and good for him for being on a huge platform and keeping it real like that. You didn't hear a hot take artist just trying to go viral with a clip shitting on Nico Harrison just because that's what's hot on the internet streets right now.
You heard a franchise legend, a man of the people, a true Maverick explain why this was one of the worst things to ever happen in the history of sports. His words were like knives, carving up Nico in the most respectful way possible, and I think that's why I like it so much. Dirk is a guy who gets it, in a situation that very much lacked people who "got it" at every level of the Mavs organization.
Hopefully, now that Nico is out and the dust has settled combined with Dirk weighing in as the final word, Mavs fans can start to turn the page. You never truly recover from something like this, but it's a new chapter with new blood and a new direction. It'll get worse before it gets better in terms of their contending status, but maybe if they just listen to Dirk for this next stage, things will work out OK.
Now, run the highlights!
