Mavericks Owner Patrick Dumont Released An Open Letter To Mavs Fans And It's A Complete Disaster
Glenn James. Getty Images.Unless you've been living under a rock this morning, chances are you've heard the news that the Nico Harrison Era is officially over in Dallas.
You would think now that this decision that Mavs fans have been screaming for since February has happened that would be the end of this story, but you'd be wrong. You see there's still a giant elephant in the room when it comes to this situation, and it's something I touched on in the blog above.
We all know Nico is a certified moron for the Luka trade. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to come to that conclusion. But it's naive to think he was the only person responsible for everything that's happened. It may have been his idea and his vision, but someone has to allow it to happen. That person, is Patrick Dumont and the Mavs ownership group. It did feel a little weird that once the business side of things started to go south for the Mavs, that finally the owner pulled the plug as opposed to ya know, either rejecting the trade idea in the first place or firing Nico 9 months ago after it happened.
The point is, none of this happens without ownership's approval. So when it was reported that Patrick Dumont was going to put out a letter to Mavs fans about this situation, I couldn't wait to see it. Would he take responsibility? Would he admit they fucked up?
Of course not

Sounds like he's putting it all on Nico which again, is both predictable and pretty funny. The part I love most was this line
"Thank you for your support, thank you for holding us accountable, thank you for your passion and for your patience. You deserve transparency and a team that reflects your spirit"
OK this one may be on me, but do I not know what "accountable" and "transparency" mean? Maybe I missed it, but wouldn't accountability include actually mentioning the Luka trade? And that pesky word transpacency, I have a question about that as well. If this is the owner's attempt to earn trust back with his fanbase, where's the transparency when it came to his involvement in everything that's happened? To me, this reads more like
"See guys! I fired Nico just like you wanted! No need to ask any more questions about anything! Accountability! Transparency!"
This is why as a Mavs fan, I think I would be happy with today's events, but still EXTREMELY skeptical about everything else. Everything that's happened with the Mavs is not just a GM issue. It's an ownership issue as well. And now, in their first opportunity to be honest and build back that trust, they instead decide to just put out a PR word salad that ultimately said a whole lot of nothing.
Instead, he tells fans that "he's fully committed to the success of the Mavericks"
Again, this is the man who approved the Luka Trade. I may be a moron, but that doesn't quite add up to me
I don't want to come off as feeling bad for Nico because again, he's an idiot. But what I think we'll never truly know is everything that went on behind the decision. His previous trades were all awesome, and then suddenly he lost his mind? Right as the Mavs were sold and Luka was up for a supermax? I dunno, it just doesn't seem like we know the full story, and I think that's what would piss me off as a Mavs fan after reading that letter. The guy who ultimately made the decision can't even mention Luka's name or admit his own role in how things played out. I'd be surprised, but everything the Mavs have done since the trade has been one PR disaster after another, so why should this be any different?
As we know in the NBA, it's definitely going to get worse for the Mavs before it gets better, because now whoever takes over the basketball side is responsible for building a roster with no future assets and two injury-prone stars already in their 30s. Good luck!
