This High School Defensive Lineman May Have Scored The Big Man Touchdown of The Millennium Last Night
On a majority of big man touchdowns, the big man who scores does so despite being a big man. Half the time they'll fall on a football that's already laying free in the end zone. Or they'll pick up a fumble, pick off a screen pass or tipped ball, and then barely outrun the offense's skill position players on his way to the end zone despite a 15-20 yard head start. In college football this year, Alabama's Kadyn Proctor has turned that idea on his head a bit.
But that's on offense. That's a whole different thing. On defense, for the most part, those are how big man touchdowns go. It's part of what makes them so great. But much like Kadyn Proctor, ol' Akeem Davis of the Wheeling Park Patriots scored that touchdown because he was a big man. I thought they had him down at the 50. I thought they definitely had him at the 45. Even after he got a little momentum, when the entire offense immediately caught up to him again at the 30, I thought he was going down for sure. Then Akeem Davis shot out of a cannon. Like the weight of all 21 other players on the field somehow slingshotted him forward. And the time they caught up to him again, and somebody on the John Marshall offense finally had the idea to take him out by the ankles, Akeem had reached the 1-yard line. By then it was too late. Touchdown Pats.
What a moment. And they won the game. By 23 points. That may have been a 14-point swing right there. Could have changed the whole game. High school football, man. I've been going to high school football games all year long (not in a weird way, my niece is in the band), and they really are awesome. The environment is great. The walking tacos are great. The quality of football is... hit or miss. But whenever we go, I have a delightful time. Makes me miss high school sports SO MUCH.
