Dan Hurley Went Full Football Guy In UConn's Record-Setting Blowout Win Friday Night

I don't think PMT does "Football Guy of the Week" anymore, but if they did, I'd be nominating Dan Hurley.

In UConn's 110-47 annihilation of UMass Lowell Friday night, Hurley pulled a classic football guy move by covering his mouth as he ripped into his team.

I don't recall ANY basketball coach doing this, ever. But you see it all the time in football.

It's right out of the Football Coach Playbook! And I can't remember a basketball coach going hand over mouth.

Hurley went viral for using some choice words during a timeout in the UConn/Michigan State Exhibition game last week. This view makes it easy to lipread, even for a moron like me.

I love Hurley coaching this hard in an exhibition game. My guess is that he thinks the lipreading of his PG-13 language detracts from the coaching moment. But not anymore. Hand over the mouth the whole time.

I mean, you can certainly infer from his reaction that he's not happy, but you're not going to be able to do any lipreading anymore.

It's Hurley's pushback against the Gotcha Culture that's so prevalent in 2025. Love it.

UConn set a school record with its 47-point halftime lead. So I'd also like to point out, as part of my Football Guy nomination for Hurley, that he called this timeout to rip into his team AFTER they had just scored to make it 70-25 early in the second half.

A cozy 45-point lead against a team with just one returning starter and 12 new players, and Hurley calls time. Jon Gruden or Mike Ditka might do that, and those are Classic Football Guys.

As for the game, yeah, UConn looked awesome. Pat Duquette's Riverhawks were overmatched from the jump, but UConn looked every bit a Final Four contender. Tarris Reed Jr. is going to be a problem for the Big East.

Hurley made it clear with his 45-point lead timeout that he expects a lot out of this team. His words echoed his actions after the game.

I'm with Jeff D. Lowe - I love this man.

A Great basketball coach who showed a football mentality on Friday Night.
