Caleb Williams Is Truly Awful And It Now Appears Ben Johnson Knows It
Scott Taetsch. Getty Images.I was told to relax and have faith in Caleb Williams after last week's win against the mighty New Orleans Saints. The Bears were 4-2 after all. What could possibly be wrong? 4-2, Just like last year when everything went swimmingly afterwards.
OK. So I watched Caleb get a chance to shake the rust off once more in a dream matchup against a Lamar Jackson-less team with about the most putrid defense you could imagine.
What really pissed me off last week and made we rage write the blog below was the fact that media/fans were encouraged by the fact that everything around Caleb Williams was up to par. As if Caleb becoming good was some automatic thing. That was the biggest possible red flag possible. Guess what? He's awful. And like I said in the blog, he's shown zero capability in being an accurate passer despite the improvements he's made in taking sacks from 2024. Even in his "good games" this was apparent. That includes at home vs Dallas. You remember his hits, but there were plenty of easy misses.
Well today was a C- game when curved on a "game manager" scale when you completely forget that he played against a laughably inept defense. And that's what struck me the most about this game. The game manager approach. Drake Maye is out there sending bombs and we're throwing five-yards on third and eight or opting for the patented John Snoop wide receiver screens. For the first time in the Ben Johnson era, we were reminded of this franchise's true sad identity.
The offensive line certainly wasn't amazing. But they weren't awful either. Look back up at that interception post above. Caleb could have booked a salon appointment in the pocket back there. Look - I don't really want to see Tyson Bagent out there, but a little part of me does just so I can get a sense of what Caleb might not be seeing in his progressions. Might actually be better for Caleb in the long run at this point, to be honest.
I don't know what else to say. Caleb was awful last year. We gave him a break for having a clown show coaching staff. But the accuracy is stalled right where it's always been. And that's been what's most important all along. Not starting 4-2. Not the fact that Ben Johnson is a good coach. Getting the quarterback right is the most important part of this game. That's why I was enraged with all the stupid positivity every one had last week. You've learned nothing.
And neither has Caleb.
