Someone's Lying: Dan Campbell Said He Was Told The NFL New York Office Buzzed The Refs To Take Away Jared Goff's TD On Sunday (Refs Said The Exact Opposite)
Dante wrote this whole blog yesterday about the Chiefs getting all these calls. I don't necessarily agree with it, mostly because I think refs just suck at their job vs there being some sort of conspiracy. I don't think refs are smart enough to pull off a conspiracy. I also don't agree with Dante throwing a fit about Mahomes 'taunting' Brian Branch. Who cares? Don't let them score. What I will say, is this isn't helping the case though.
[Source] - After the game, Lions coach Dan Campbell wasn’t eager to talk about the play, but his account is very different when it comes to that last detail.
“Well, it doesn’t matter if I agree or disagree. I know it came from New York,” Campbell said.
At the time, it wasn’t clear if Campbell was making an assumption or told that directly. But during his radio appearance on the “Costa and Jansen show with Heather” Wednesday, Campbell was asked to clarify if he was told directly by an official that the call came from New York. Campbell’s response:
“Yeah.”
Reminder this is what Wrolstad said:
Question: What kind of help or assistance, if any, did you have from the replay assistant in Kansas City or from New York? Wrolstad: We did not have any assistance from Kansas City or New York.
Question: So that was just a discussion amongst the crew itself?
Wrolstad: “That’s right.
Yeah, someone is lying about this play:
This is the sort of shit that can't happen. There are a million missed calls every single week in the NFL, because refs are getting worse and worse. They rely on replay and help from assistance. So if you missed the exact rule of Goff having to be set after lining up under center, so be it. At the minimum just say that assistance came in and told you otherwise. It'd still be a problem but way less than this lying or denying what happened.
There just has to be a better way to go about this. Of course it's all magnified because it helped the Chiefs and it happened on Sunday Night Football. But what the fuck are we doing here? You can't have either 1) refs lying or 2) a coach calling this out if he's lying. I choose to believe Dan Campbell because there's no reason for him to say otherwise unless misunderstood something. I highly doubly doubt he misunderstood 'it was buzzed from New York' vs 'it wasn't buzzed from New York.'
It's as simple as this - either have assistance on all these plays or just stop trying to use replay. Otherwise we get into this sort of shit where someone gets caught lying. Oh and just let cool shit stand. I don't care about rules like they have to get set for a whole second somewhere. If it's cool, let it go.
