To The Surprise of Absolutely No One, Jon Heyman Says Alex Bregman Will Opt Out Of The Final Two Years Of His Contract With The Red Sox
Well, no shit.
Sorry for the PG-13 language, but this was a certainty. And I'm already annoyed he might be going to a new team.
There was a report last week that some in the Red Sox organization were hopeful Bregman might stay put and not test the free agency waters, but that always reeked of wishful thinking.
With Scott Boras as his agent—and no qualifying offer tied to any potential deal—Bregman will have suitors.
“I can tell you in [Matt] Chapman’s case, [Blake] Snell’s case, [Carlos] Correa’s case, the minute the qualifying offer was gone, the market expanded probably from a couple of teams wanting to do short-term to 10 or 15 teams wanting to do long-term contracts,” Boras told Rob Bradford back in September.
Jon Heyman says the Tigers, Jays, Mariners, and Royals could all be in the mix for his services.
The Sox gave Bregman an opt-out after both the first and second years of this three-year deal. It always felt like a big season would end with Bregman looking at free agency.
I am firmly on record - Bring Bregman Back.
In what world can the Big Market Red Sox sign Alex Bregman, then trade Rafael Devers and his massive contract, just to let Bregman walk???
He's a plus defender who was on his way to a strong offensive season before a right quad injury. His teammates and manager love him.
Cora has done all he can. It's up to Craig Breslow and ownership to commit to bringing back Bregman.
Cut. That. Check.
The Sox got back to the playoffs for the first time since 2021. They're on record as acknowledging this is their "window of contention." So let's make sure Sox fans hold them to that.
And contention in 2026 starts with re-signing Alex Bregman.
