Confidence: Auburn's AD Isn't Firing Hugh Freeze 'At This Point', Decides To Compare The Situation To A Car That May Or May Not Turn On In The Morning

[Source] - Auburn athletic director John Cohen was recently asked about the status of Freeze’s job after dropping Saturday’s game to Georgia at home. He claims “never say never” about a potential change. However, his overall “expectation” is for Freeze to finish out the 2025 season and return in 2026.

“I don’t know if I’m going to walk outside and my car is going to start or not, I think it is,” Cohen said Monday via AL.com. “I have an expectation it will. But if my car doesn’t start enough, then I will evaluate that and make decisions about my car. But that’s not my expectation at this point about our football program.”

I've been on this Earth for long enough to know all about the mid-season votes of confidence and how they never work out. It's basically a kiss of death if a college AD or pro GM comes out and talks about how confident they are in their coach to turn it around, how they are planning to keep said coach. That all goes to hell pretty fast.

Never have I seen an AD compare their team/coach to a car that may or may not turn on in the morning. That's gotta be the lowest amount of confidence one can have. There's no reason to make that comparison, but I'm happy he did because it's one of the funniest things I've seen when talking about coaches. And, sure, Auburn has gotten fucked over by the refs the last two weeks, but they also haven't looked great throughout Freeze's time. We live in a world in college sports where you don't just rebuild over time, not with NIL and the transfer portal, you better be competing at a high standard right away.

Let's be honest here, 'at this point' is doing a whole lot of heavy lifting in the statement. It gives Cohen an out if Freeze sucks the rest of the way or gets on a winning streak. I know and understand why people say things like that, but you should have to make a definitive statement. No giving yourself an out either way if you're going to give a mid-season vote of confidence. Can't be feeling good when your AD is using broken car metaphors though. That's never going to work out.
