Next Year's World Cup Officially Has A Cinderella Story - Cape Verde Wins 3-0 And Becomes The Second-Smallest Country To Ever Qualify For The Event
I know expansion is stupid and I do hate the World Cup is going to 48 teams next year in the United States. BUT, that doesn't take away from this sort of story. Cape Verde is a tiny country, who is currently ranked 70th in the world, and just booked a trip to the US (or Canada, perhaps Mexico) next year. It's officially soccer's Cinderella story. It's the sort of team people love rooting for in the NCAA Tournament (looking at you FGCU, UMBC and absolutely not St. Peters. Fuck St. Peter's).
Not only did they qualify, they did it in impressive fashion. Going out and winning a group over Cameroon and Angola and these countries that we're used to seeing is what makes it impressive. I also kind of hate that they are labeled the second-smallest country to make the World Cup. Iceland is technically less populated, but it's Iceland. They've been legit good before at this sport and have made the quarterfinals in Euro play. This is a first-timer coming to crash the World Cup.
And yeah, we're all thinking the same here. US is going to be in Pot 1 for the World Cup draw. Give us Cape Verde. I've always had good luck with my teams playing mid-majors. Nothing can go wrong in that sort of game. We'll take every advantage we can possibly get. This would be step 1. Either way, shout out Cape Verde. We have our first Cinderella at the World Cup.
