After 145 Days On The Run, New Orleans Has Finally Arrested Escaped Prisoner Derrick Groves, Last Remaining of The 10 Orleans Justice Center Fugitives
It was a hell of a run. I was starting to think they were never going to get him. Nearly 5 months ago, Derrick Groves, along with 9 other inmates, strong armed a guard into cutting off the prison water supply, ripped a toilet off the wall of a cell, and crawled right through the toilet hole in the side of the Orleans Parish Justice Center. It was almost to easy.
Slowly but surely, the fugitives were brought to justice. Half of them didn't make it out of New Orleans. Some made it as far as Baton Rouge. A couple extra ambitious ones made it as far as east Texas, and even lead police officers on a high speed chase before they were eventually returned to custody. One made an Instagram video pleading with Donald Trump (and Lil' Wayne... and Kim Kardashian... and some rappers) for his freedom.
But Derrick Groves, the prisoner who was immediately labeled the most dangerous escapee of them all, remained in the wind. He was gone for so long that most everybody had forgotten his existence. But finally, after 145 days on the run, Derrick Groves was found yesterday hiding out at a home in Atlanta, Georgia.
It was touch and go there for a minute. There was a brief standoff before the police were finally able to get Derrick Groves outside. Considering how Derrick Groves was labeled the most dangerous and volatile of the 10 fugitives, I was thinking for a while there that meant he wasn't going to give himself up easily. That if he went down, he was going to go down shooting in a blaze a glory. But nope. The cops got him. In the most anti-climactic was possible. Well done, I guess.
Hell of an operation they're running down there at the Orleans Parish Justice Center. 10 prisoners escaped through a hole in the wall. During the manhunt, they mistakenly released there wrong prisoner (apparently he had a similar first name).
Additionally, New Orleans police arrested double digit friends and family members who allegedly assisted the fugitives in their escape efforts. Which I still think is a little bullshit. I know you shouldn't be helping escaped prisoners. But they're fucking prisoners. They're dangerous people. Probably kinda fucking scary to deal with. YOU GUYS (the prison, the state, etc.) failed to do your job by letting them escape. It's YOUR FAULT you put these family members in situations where they're face-to-face with a violent criminal. They probably just panicked and did what they had to do to get rid of them. But I digress. Obviously they should have called the cops the moment he was out of their sight. I get it. But I'd still be annoyed as shit if I was arrested after being put in a situation that was 100% the fault of the people who were supposed to be keeping that man away from you.
What a saga. 10 inmates walk out a hole in the wall of a prison. 145 days later, it's finally over. Until next time, Orleans Parish Justice Center. I have no reason to believe I won't be blogging about you again soon. And good luck back in prison, Derrick. If you cut a rap album about it, I'll be sure it give it a listen.
UPDATE: I wrote this blog Wednesday evening, but since it's been posted we had this additional piece of information about his arrest drop…
You know what the fucked up thing about that is? No chance the police give his girlfriend the $20K reward for information leading to Derrick Groves arrest. If anything they're probably going to arrest her for aiding and abetting his escape. Which if she really is his girlfriend, she's probably very guilty of. So if they have to charge her with that, then fine. But she should ALSO get that $20K bounty. A deal is a deal.
