How Can You Not Be Romantic About Baseball: The Guy Who Caught Mike Trout's 400th Career Home Run Ball Requested To Play Catch With Him In Exchange For The Ball
Listen, this happened over the weekend and I still decided to go back today and crack another smile watching it. In a world of greed, this fella had a perfect opportunity on his hands. Home run streak balls are one of the most fascinating things in sports. You can just be a regular joe, buy tickets to the game, and if you beat that dork Zach Hample to the catch as he runs full speed to your seat trucking over every kid and grandma in the way, you've got a prized possession on your hand. You ask for season tickets, maybe some money, signed memorabilia, anything you can pawn off for some quick dollars if you're lucky enough to catch that home run ball.
So forgive me for thinking that the dude who caught a ball worth a pretty penny gives some hope to the sport and the world out there. I don't know if Trout is going to hit 500 home runs before it's all said and done (my educated guess is probably not), so this is the last milestone ball we'll see hit off the hands of one of baseball's greats. I know he got some signed bats, but asking to go out there and play catch probably had the front office smiling that they didn't have to pony anything up of value.
I will say, judging by the beat reporter who posted this' replies, the catch only lasted for a minute and Trout couldn't find a glove because the equipment team had already taken them all away. Kinda feel like the guy got a little hosed in that department, but ultimately, I'm going to just take the positives from this and find some optimism in the world. This kinda feels like a "Dinner With Jay-Z" or $500,000 moment but I'm choosing love and finding the romance in baseball.
