"I've Never Seen Anything Like That." It's Safe to Say Jon Gruden is Not - Repeat NOT - a Fan of Jordon Hudson Appearing on UNC's Sideline
For true hard core, rock-ribbed Football Guys, there are certain traditions of the game that are not to be violated. You don't talk shit about your opponent. You don't throw the ball when you have a huge lead. You always shake the opposing coach's hand after a game. And you don't have your 24 year old girlfriend on the sideline dressed like she just got out of a bachelorette party's limo in Nashville.
But one thing about Bill Belichick is he doesn't believe in society's rules. Not the unwritten ones, anyway. This is a man who ran up the score on a recently unretired Joe Gibbs, after all. And publicly shunned Eric Mangini, who made him godfather to his son. If you want Bill Belichick to follow a rule, you'd better put it in writing. And even then, there's no guarantee. He lays down the law and then he breaks it.
Of course, if you're going to violate that last rule I mentioned, you'd better be successful in the game after your WAG gets all up in your business for the world to see. If you go out and get boat raced, particularly by a UCF team that is undefeated but still hasn't played a Big 12 Conference opponent and is unranked? Well then, you open yourself up for criticism. And boy oh boy, true Football Guy Jon Gruden didn't miss his opportunity. Dave is obviously fed up. Greg Olsen sort of tempered his criticism. But Gruden ran up the score against Coach Bill or his assistant with whom there's obviously some history, Mike Lombardi:
Q: "Has [your wife] ever been on the sidelines before a game?"
Gruden: “Well, actually she called the game-winner against the Ravens on Monday Night Football a couple of years ago. She came down on the field and helped me through a tough situation. It was an all-out blitz, and she told me to go with 58 Surge. So thank God she saved the day that day. But I’ve never seen anything like that.
“You know, Mike Lombardi works for North Carolina. I’ve heard him criticize me several times. I’m sure he’ll produce a TikTok today explaining exactly what was going on there.”
By way of full disclosure, here's the AI video Dave referenced:
That has 6.5 million views and 17K likes. Which proves it's open season on Bill and Jordon, and the hunting will continue until the losing stops.
As far as Gruden, he couldn't be more justified. I don't know what his history with Lombardi is, but he likely got kicked by the man when he was down. And now that Tar Heel's football is down, turnabout is fair play.
Now's the time to settle all the family business. And if you're going to have your honey sashaying her way among your players and coaches in knee high boots and a denim miniskirt, then as Olsen said, you'd better win, not get your dick kicked into the turf 34-9.
The Patriots fan in me thinks this beef might go all the way back to 24 years ago:
… but either way, I respect Gruden for taking his shots now that he can. The bottom line is that when true Football Guys are willing to go after in each other in a public way like this, we all win. UNC's game against Clemson a week from Saturday can't come soon enough.
