Draymond Green Declaring That Josh Allen Is "Not That Guy" And Isn't Someone Who Can Lead The Bills To A Championship Might Be The Worst Take Of All Time
Look, by now we all know the deal when it comes to Draymond. He's one of the best defenders the NBA has ever seen. He's the straw that stirs the drink when it comes to how the Warriors play. He may not be their best player, but the Warriors are not the Warriors without Draymond. That's a fact, sorry if it offends. We know he's going to do some fucked up shit on the court whether that's kicking someone in the dick or choking someone out, and then he'll deny that any of it was intentional and just a wacky coincidence. We know he hates Rudy Gobert with a passion.
We also know that he's not afraid to say some insane shit into a microphone whenever he's on a podcast, whether it's his own or someone else's. Usually, those things are NBA-related and even if you didn't agree, at least you had to put some stock into what he said given his experience.
This time, he crossed sports into football, and threw out maybe one of the most insane takes I've ever heard
“He's never going to get it done when it matters the most. And so I don't care how Herculean of a comeback expert you have at home in week one, he's never going to be the guy that's going to come out and win a championship and be the guy when it matters the most; he's not the guy.”
To me, this is insane for a few reasons.
For starters, the NFL and the game of football are VERY different from the NBA and the game of basketball. In basketball, a singular player can pretty much carry a team to the title by himself. In that sport, one player has much more of an impact and control over the result than in football. There are only 10 players on the court, everyone plays both ends of the floor etc. It sort of feels like Draymond is trying to suggest Allen can't do that in football, to which I would say no quarterback does that. Not Brady, not Mahomes etc. Football is a true team sport.
But even if you don't think that's true, the idea that Josh Allen "can't win the big one" because he "isn't that guy" is sort of intellectually dishonest. I would ask, what more would Draymond liked Josh Allen to do in the 2024 AFC Championship game?> You know, this performance?
Josh Allen "isn't that guy" because his teammate dropped this pass?
Mind you, Allen had already driven the Bills down the field to tie the game at 29 earlier in the 4th quarter with around 6 mintues left. He needed his defense to make a play, but they didn't. Then on their final drive, you had that drop on 4th & 5. That's on Allen??
The year before against the Chiefs in the divisional round. Another brutal 27-24 loss in which Allen had 186 yard passing (1 TD) and then another 72 yards rushing (2 TDs). In that game, Allen once again drove the Bills down the field in the 4th quarter, setting up a 44 yard FG attempt with 1:47 left to tie the game. What happened?
You want to talk about coming through in the clutch when it matters most? What exactly would Draymond call this play from the 2021 season in that epic battle with the Chiefs? Is this not coming through in a MASSIVE spot?
Unfortunately, Josh Allen doesn't play defense, because as we know, Mahomes went down the field in 13 seconds, the Chiefs tied it, and then won in OT. You'll remember, the Chiefs won the coin toss and selected the ball, so Allen never even got a chance in OT to come through.
What about any of that is his fault/shows he's "not the guy"?? I see a player who has done his job and put his team in positions to win, only to see things fall apart the second he steps off the field or someone fucks up with a brutal drop.
Will the Bills and Allen ever win a Super Bowl? Who knows. I'd say they have as good a shot as any, considering Josh Allen is at worst the 2nd best quarterback in the league (and the reigning MVP). We've seen him come through in the playoffs, he just also had to deal with things going to shit after he left the game, which resulted in the loss. It's not like he's showing up in the playoffs and shitting his pants left and right playing awful football and letting his team down. He's literally doing everything you could ask of a franchise quarterback in those spots.
It also shouldn't be overlooked that a large part of how people view Draymond as a basketball player and a champion……is because he plays with Steph Curry. If Draymond was asked to be the #1 guy in GS and there was no Steph Curry, how would they do?
With only a few years left in his playing career, it does seem like Draymond is ramping up for his post-NBA days as a talking head on TV, because this is exactly the type of insane shit we see said on every annoying talking head show. You could tell me this was First Take or any show like it and I'd believe you, so maybe he's just getting his reps in as a rage baiter. If so, not a bad job.
If he truly believes this…..well then yikes.
