(Variety) - Michael Caine is eyeing a return to the screen opposite his friend Vin Diesel in a sequel to their film The Last Witch Hunter.Caine played Dolan, a priest who accompanied Diesel’s hunter Kaulder in his fight to prevent the spread of an epidemic launched by the evil Witch Queen, played by Julie Engelbrecht. Per Variety, Caine has yet to finalize his deal. The 2015 film grossed just $27 million in North America, but performed better overseas, earning $119 million internationally.

Caine initially announced his retirement from acting in 2023 at the age of 90, after starring in Oliver Parker’s The Great Escaper, in which he played British World War II veteran Bernard Jordan. “I’ve figured I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and it’s got incredible reviews,” Caine told BBC Radio 4’s Today show at the time. “The only parts I’m likely to get now are old men, 90-year-old men, maybe 85. And I thought, Well, I might as well leave with all this. I’ve got wonderful reviews. What have I got to do to beat this?”

Caine’s storied career spans more than 60 years. His iconic body of work features over 130 film and TV credits. He won two Academy Awards for best supporting actor, for Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) and The Cider House Rules (1999). His career began in the 1960s with roles in Zulu and the Harry Palmer spy films, and he achieved further fame for his performances in Alfie and The Man Who Would Be King. He’s arguably best known for his role as Alfred the butler in Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, the Dark Knight trilogy.

Welcome back SIR Michael Caine, nice to have you back in the Batcave. Even if it's only for 'The Last Witch Hunter 2'.

For most people out there, it probably seems like an incredibly random & undeserving movie to end his retirement for… But Sir Michael & Vin Diesel go WAY back.

Family.

Now I knew they were working on a documentary together about their unexpected friendship, but I didn't think we'd see our legendary Sir back on the silver screen too.

I could listen to him talk about Burmah all fucking day long. And twice on Sundah.

And like that Tweet alludes to… I'm really hoping this means he'll actually have his final movie role be something in 'The Odyssey' next summer. Christopher Nolan loves honoring the legacy of cinema too much to not have that happen on his watch. It would be the Hollywood ending Alfred needs, and deserves. He won't be wearing hockey pads.

But either way, I'm happy just having Sir Michael back in the mix. If he wants to Brett Favre this shit and unretire a few times until the bitter end, so be it! So long as he keeps tweeting out Mt. Vesuvius fire flame gems too

Batman Begin indeed. Now if you'll excuse me I'll have to go watch 'Last Witch Hunter 1' so I don't miss any big plot points for the sequel. I'm sure the 18% RT score is photoshopped or something. Wow and Elijah Wood is in it too? What a beautiful paycheck for them all.

Love seeing my guys get paid out there! Family.

PS: shout out to Robbie Fox for being the 1st to alert be about this life changing news. Give him & Clem a follow down in the basement they're making Momma proud
