Time Is A Flat Circle: The Bears Should Mortgage The Future To Get A Defensive End

I've been wrestling with this take. Jerry Jones says he's not trading Parsons so maybe this entire thing is a moot point, but the internet is talking about it so much that it is impossible to ignore.

The Bears aren't considered the favorite to land Parsons and I don't fully understand the NFL salary cap or what this would mean, but...the Bears know these roads. We've been down this EXACT same path before.

Second year QB that was a high draft pick. First year offensive coach. A veteran defensive coordinator. A pretty good defense that could be GREAT if they add an elite edge rusher. It's 2018 all over again.

I think the memory and pain of 2018 actually skews how that group and that trade was viewed. Putting this here just because...we should

Quarter of an inch, half a rotation, and who knows what happens that year. That Bears defense was real. A championship caliber defense that was held back by a QB and an offense that just wasn't good enough. We know that now. Didn't really know it then for sure (I never believed in Trubisky, but I digress).

We don't know if Caleb is that franchise QB yet, but I am MUCH more confident in him and Ben Johnson taking a step than I ever was with Nagy and Mitch. A lot of people are saying that this is a trade you only make if you're one player away and the Bears aren't one player away. There is plenty of merit in that argument. IF Caleb is really good then maybe the Bears are one player away. AND...you can't choose when stud players become available. In theory, at this moment, Micah Parsons is available. The Bears have their QB on a rookie contract. It can work.

If you don't believe in Caleb, and I understand why people wouldn't at this point, then you can't. Me...I am a gamblin' man. I want to roll the dice and go for it. I think Caleb will get there and if you have a lights out defense then you've got everything.

This was the package for Khalil Mack

With those first round picks the Raiders took Josh Jacobs and DB Damon Arnette who were picked 24th and 19th.

To me, that's a price I am willing to pay to have a top 5 edge rusher/blitzer while Caleb is on his rookie deal. And even if Caleb doesn't live up to the hype I have a hard time imaging that the Bears don't ride out his full rookie contract with the 5th year option. So when it's time to move on after that 5th year you'd have your picks back to take the next QB who we will be excited about and repeat the cycle.

I would do it if that is the price.
