The Minnesota Timberwolves Are Reportedly Bringing Back One Of The Most Iconic NBA Jerseys To Ever Exist

When you think of iconic NBA throwback jerseys, somewhere pretty damn high on that list are the KG Era Timberwolves. You have teams like the Raptors and Grizzlies who are up there, as are the Hornets or Pistons, but the Wolves "trees" uniform is one of the more iconic looks in all of NBA history. All the colorway variations are great, but the retro black jersey is easily the leader in the clubhouse. That thing is incredible.
I bring this up of course, because from the sounds of things, their return is upon us
OK, now before we all freak out, I decided to put my Big J hat on and do a little research. It's just really hard to know what Twitter accounts to believe nowadays, especially anything NBA-related. Outside of this tweet, at the time of writing this blog, I didn't really see this reported anywhere else. We did see something like this happen back in 2018-19 when they did it as an alternate, but not a primary. What I can say is there's most definitely a paper trail left by the team that this is most likely legit.
It all starts back on their birthday IG post to KG, and then mixing it up in the comments
Then last month, you had more teasing
I'll be honest, I didn't go to Big J School (shoutout BIS majors at ASU), but that's two sources right? Certainly, it's enough for us to put stock into the tweet telling us the throwbacks are coming back this season, and frankly that's good enough for me. If that tweet ends up not being true, well then that's fucked. Nobody should ever joke about the return of one of the greatest uniforms in NBA history.
You then have to remember the ownership change. Now that they've taken over, this is a FANTASTIC move by the new ownership group led by ARod. Talk about winning over your fanbase immediately. That's such an easy no-brainer decision and I'm happy for Wolves fans that they may finally have an ownership group that gets it. Not a bad way to start off this new era.
The way I see it, there's another angle to this decision that I think is pretty important during this new ownership era. In my mind, it takes a step towards mending the broken relationship between the Timberwolves and the greatest player in their franchise's history, Kevin Garnett. Now that Glen Taylor (who KG hates) is out of the picture, he can finally come back and have his number retired. Even though I'll personally always think of KG as a Celtic, we shouldn't forget just how incredible he was while on the Timberwolves
I mean, is it not obvious you pick a night where you wear the retro throwbacks and you retire KG's #21 before that game? There's a PR layup for you ARod, free of charge. I just think the fine people of Minnesota, who have basically gone their whole lives experiencing nothing but sports pain, deserve that moment. Nobody on the roster is wearing #21, so that seems like a no-brainer move as well.
As a Wolves fan, all of this shit would have me over the moon. The team is probably the best it's been since the KG days and is itching to take that next leap into making the NBA Finals, ownership just committed to spending when it came to their core pieces (even if it did cost them NAW, but get ready to learn Terrance Shannon Jr), and now these KG Era jerseys are back. That's a pretty good summer if you ask me.
And another thing, let this be a lesson to the 29 other teams in the NBA. This is what we, as fans, want. I don't need futuristing bullshit from Nike or jerseys that make you want to claw your eyes out. Just play the hits. And don't make them something you wear like 5 times a year. Make them primary options. Thankfully, the NBA is a copycat league, and more and more teams are starting to wake up. Now, if we could just get this to also exist in the All-Star game, we'd be cooking with gas.
