Not To Go Full "Old Man Yelling At Clouds", But Kids These Days Are Soft For Riding Around On Electric Scooters Everywhere

School's out for the summer. Which means that in every town across America right now, there's an army of a couple hundred youths buzzing around the streets on electric scooters.

Now maybe you have an issue with electric scooters because they're dangerous. Maybe you take an issue with electric scooters because kids fly around on them with reckless abandon and don't obey the rules of the road. But for me personally? I think it's important for kids to do some dangerous shit during the summer. I think it's important for kids to not give a hoot about some rules during the summer. It builds character.

No. My biggest qualm personally with electric scooters is that kids these days will never know what it's like to have to put in the work to ride a bike everywhere you want to go all summer. They don't have to pedal all the way across town in 95 degree heat. Climbing up hills, sprinting home because a summer thunderstorm is about to roll in, jumping off of curbs to catch some sick air. You used to have to actually go out there and earn your fun in the summers.

Kids these days just get on their scooter, hit the throttle and buzz along to wherever they want to go. They don't need to break a single sweat. Heck, most of them probably have a nice little fan attached to the handlebars to keep them cool during their trek. They are one step away from having 10-year-olds just calling an Uber to get to little Johnny's house for the day to play Fortnite.

What I will say is that I've seen a decent uptick in the amount of kids who go out fishing lately. So maybe this generation of kids doesn't completely lack the ability to go out and touch grass. But until they ditch the electric scooters and bikes, I'll continue to lack faith.
